If that was the case, he wasn’t really mine.
I couldn’t lose what I never had to begin with.
Wrong,my wolf insisted.
She couldn’t theorize about the past or the future. She simply felt the connection between Kane and us.
His wolf half accepted us.
His human half adored us.
And together, they worshipped us.
It was a pretty picture that might fool my wolf, but not me.
I’d deal with Kane later. Right now, the other alphas were right in front of me, just waiting for my revenge.
Stalking my prey, I lowered my snout and sniffed the ground.
The tang of blood made me salivate for violence.
Once the initial alpha with russet brown eyes had seemed to realize who I was, he’d backed off with a look of disgust on his face.
He hid his injuries well, but I spotted how he favored one leg and stiffened his back. He was worse off than the others. And therefore more vulnerable.
I debated killing him first, or saving him for last. Kane might try to stop me once I attacked, so I had to be quick about it.
Last,I decided, needing to go for the strongest alpha first. My initial burst of energy would have the most power behind it, so I’d have the best chance if I made my selection carefully.
“You blaspheme our Goddess, human,” the one named Ryker snarled.
“Silence,” Kane snapped from a distance.
I turned my gaze on the wolf with brown eyes, then sniffed the air to scent his blood.
He, too, was gravely injured. He didn’t do a very good job of hiding it, though. He coddled a gash across his middle as blood soaked into his waistband.
I found it odd that they were all wearing pants when they’d been naked in the forest.
Then it occurred to me that these were still my mates, even if only a frayed tether connected us. A quick glance at Kane confirmed he didn’t want me to be tempted. A sliver of light flashed in his eyes, something so brief that I wondered if I had imagined it.
The growls brought my attention back to the others, and seeing them so close up made my stomach clench with need.
Need that I hated myself for.
My wolf desired them and hated them at the same time.
They rejected us,she insisted. They must die.
My heartbeat quickened when I moved on to the next alpha to continue my evaluation.
Lust and bloodlust had a fine line, so I would satisfy my wolf’s urges either way.
Taking slow, deliberate steps, I surveyed the next two shifters. One of the alphas slumped against the wall and another sat on a rock and resumed slowly eating the petals of a Moon Blossom.
Kane growled at him, clearly not amused.
I knew that the wolves gave the flowers a spiritual sort of value, but there was definitely a practicality to eating them. Doing so had partially healed the dark-haired alpha’s wounds.
