As my bones grew, reformed, and took a new shape, I didn’t really care.
I just wanted the pain to end.
KANE
Leaving Her like this broke something inside of me.
My wolf howled with frustration.
He didn’t understand why I was doing this, but he wouldn’t be able to listen to reason.
Kaitsja was everything. I’d waited for Her, bled for Her, patiently stifled my wolf in the darkness for Her.
I would do this too, walk away from Her now, even if it killed me.
Because mating Her in this state would be too dangerous and unpredictable. She shouldn’t be shifting. I wasn’t the one who had pushed Her into heat.
Theyhad… with their damned howls.
If I tried to mate her now with the other pack alphas beating at my door, I feared Althea’s vision would still come true.
Even if I did nothing, perhaps her vision had been an inevitable fate. Not all visions could be changed.
She would die.
I wasn’t going to let that happen.
Fate be damned.
“Where do you think you’re going?” my second-in-command barked.
Julian was the only one with enough age and authority to question me like that. The other pack members rumbled their disapproval, but waited to see my response. I often let Julian’s frank remarks slide because I appreciated his honesty.
We’d survived the war and far too many years in hiding in part because wolves like Julian helped me keep my sanity.
“I’m going to fix this,” I said, knowing that I was being vague.
My meaning would be clear enough in a few moments.
He followed me as I stormed to the front door where I had last heard the alphas howling.
“You can’t seriously be thinking of going out there,” he said.
When I moved to open the door, he took my wrist in an iron grip.
Glaring at him, I showed my teeth, but I didn’t use my alpha’s power to command him to stand down. I didn’t like to use my orders on wolves like Julian.
“The time for hiding has come to an end,” I informed him.
I’d only agreed because of Althea’s visions.
We had been waiting for the Moon Guardian.
Now… she was here.
Julian’s jaw flexed. He didn’t have my level of faith when it came to the Moon Guardian we all believed in.
He leaned in. “Once you show yourself, there will be no going back. Either you’ll resume a war that we already lost, or you’ll lead the alphas right to the female.”
