I glared at the intruder. Hadn’t I locked it?
It surprised me to spot a tall, powerful wolf shifter in the doorway to my study. His crystal blue eyes and dark hair marked him as somethingother, but my wolf instantly recognized his.
I raised an eyebrow when I spotted the shadow of his beast within his soul.
“And who are you?” I asked, although it was obvious this was some sort of alpha of a pack I’d never encountered.
Which suggested he wasn’t from this realm.
“Logan,” he said with a faint smile. “Shadow and I are acquaintances. He told me what was going on, so here I am.” He entered the room and shut the door behind him. His gaze fell to the worn parchment under my open palm. “I see you’re on the right track. Dante has taken your mate to Hell’s Heart.”
I shot to my feet. “What do you know of it?”
His smile widened, showing off dimples that gave him an innocent look when I suspected he was anything but. “Dante is a member of my mate-circle, so I know quite a lot.” His gaze dropped to my sharp teeth poking from my lips. “I’m here to help you track him down, so I suggest you put those away.”
Growling, I didn’t bother to retract my wolf. This male had too much explaining to do for me to trust him, but I did give him the guise of compliance as I sat back down.
I motioned to the single seat across from my desk. “I’m listening.”
He gave me a subtle nod, then took the seat.
Another alpha would have used different mannerisms to convey an alliance, but his strange behavior was further proof that he didn’t belong to this realm, despite the wolf living in his soul.
That might have supported his claim, but it didn’t make me trust him, especially if he had come here because of Shadow, one of the alphas that I trusted the least.
I’d been working with their packs and it was apparent that the Midnight Pack didn’t give two shits about their leader. I half-expected for them to be dumb enough to attack, and if they did, I wouldn’t make good on my promise to take their alpha’s life.
His heart belonged to Kaitsja.
Whether she wanted to protect it… or eat it… was her choice to make. Not mine.
“Dante left my realm some time ago due to a threat he wouldn’t elaborate on,” Logan began. “I haven’t seen him in at least two months.”
I frowned and leaned back in my chair. I didn’t cross my arms. If the other wolf made an aggressive move, I needed to be able to rip out his throat if needed, so I kept my hands free. “And you allowed him to go?”
Logan raised a brow. “If you know Dante at all, you would know that there’s no stopping him if he puts his mind to something.”
“I thought you said he was a member of your mate-circle?” Mate circles weren’t uncommon in my world, and I imagined they worked much the same way in other realms, too. “Can’t you just feel where he is now?”
Being mate-bonded would open a telepathic capability. That was why it concerned me so greatly that I couldn’t feel Kaitsja when I should be able to, no matter where she was.
He chuckled. “Dante doesn’t want to be found, which means I can’t reach him that way. Especially if he’s in Hell’s Heart.”
“And your Omega?” I asked.
He blinked at me a few times. “Omega?” he repeated as if I’d said something he’d never heard of before.
By the Goddess, what kind of idiot was I dealing with?
“Your female,” I elaborated. “Certainly she can confirm your suspicions.” The telepathic bond usually ran stronger between the Omega and her mates.
Although, it occurred to me that this wolf had mate-bonded with a Hunter.
So perhaps his female wasn’t a wolf at all.
“Even Lily won’t be able to feel him if he’s in Hell’s Heart,” he said with a sigh as if this was a long argument that had never been resolved. “And I had chosen to be a comfort to her until he returned and leave well enough alone.” He dropped his gaze to the parchment that depicted a place he had called “Hell’s Heart.” “That is, until my ancestors told me he’s trying to kill the Goddess that created my kind.”
Unmistakable anger seeped into his voice, making me relax.
