I go into my closet. When I turn on the light, I find a note on the dresser.
These should suffice. ~ M
In the drawers are tank tops and yoga pants, jeans and stretch pants. That was fast. When did Maddox find the time to do this? When did they even get delivered?
Supes.
I let out a breath and pull on a grey tank with some pants. They’re soft and stretchy. He even remembered socks.
When I’m dressed in ‘normal’ comfy clothes, I feel weirdly better. Don’t get me wrong, I love a top-tier Armani as much as the next girl, but sometimes you just want to veg on the couch instead of feeling as if you have to sit like you’re balancing a book on your head.
I grab the folder that Maddox gave me, deciding to get to work on this party I’m supposed to be planning. But there’s no phone in my room, so I go downstairs to make the calls to the suppliers. I already made a list of what I need to book, so it’s just a question of doing it.
I see Jane in the hall and give her a wave.
‘Hey,’ she says. ‘We’re leaving today. Sorry, I thought we’d have more time to hang out, but,’ she shrugs, ‘incubi.’
I nod. ‘Incubi.’
‘Hey, look, uh …’ she lowers her voice. ‘I don’t know if you know, but Korban and I had to stay here for a while when Alex and the other Iron I’s got put in the Mountain.’
‘Oh? No, didn’t know that.’
‘Well, I just … I don’t know what you have with these guys, but it was kind of weird. They were pretty close to killing Korban.’
‘I thought they were friends.’ I say.
‘Yeah, it’s like some kind of demon territorial thing. Maddox wanted a mate. I fit the bill, but I was contracted to the Iron I’s …’
‘Did youwantto be with Maddox?’ I ask, not sure if I want to hear the answer.
Jane looks disgusted. ‘No way. No offense, but ew. Besides, he came to his senses, and it all worked out.’
I frown. ‘So then, why are you telling me?’
‘Because you shouldn’t trust him,’ she whispers. ‘He’s slippery as fuck. Nothing he says is the whole truth. Same with Daemon.’
‘Noted,’ I say. ‘Incubi.’
She snorts. ‘Fucking incubi.’
ChapterSixteen
DAEMON
‘I’ll see you.’ Alex says, looking for a second like he might hug me, causing me to take a step back.
Instead, his arm goes around his mate, who has hardly looked at me even once the whole time she’s been here.
‘Yeah,’ I say, my eyes flicking from her to him.
I watch as my brother leaves through the portal, taking Jane and the rest of his clan back to the newly built mansion they have in the forests just outside of Metro.
Jane waves goodbye to Jules, and I wonder how close they could possibly have gotten while she was here, but Jules waves back with a genuine-looking smile on her face.
The portal closes, and our guests are finally gone. I feel like I can breathe again.
I side-eye Jules.Almost.
