“Are we talking about sending her away, you both going somewhere for a few days, or something else?”

“The first two.”

“My vote is for you both to take off. Even better if it was far away, like Paris or Switzerland.”

“Why those two places?” He shifted his leg so that he was touching hers, pleased when she didn’t move out of reach.

She shrugged. “They both sound like cool places to go, and they’d definitely be out of reach.”

“Pick one and we’ll go.”

“Yeah, right.”

“Why not? You can bodyguard us in Paris as well as you can here. Did you know Paris is a city for lovers?” He would love to take her there. When they’d been together, they’d talked of traveling someday, when they could afford to. Since then he’d been to almost all the places they’d dreamed of seeing. He’d flown to the cities, concluded his business, and then flown out as soon as possible, wanting to get home to Kali.

“I’m not going to Paris with you, Zach.”

Maybe not this week, but someday. “I’ve been thinking about the best thing to do, and I’m going to send Kali and Cinda to Milan for a week. I have a friend Kali’s met before who has a villa they can stay in. Cinda loves Milan, so she’ll jump on an all-expense-paid vacation.” He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I should have told Cinda about Kali being abducted before now, but she’ll find a way to make it all about her, so I’m dreading it.”

“Shouldn’t her concern be for Kali?”

“You’d think so.”

“Will Kali be safe with her?”

“Yes. Underneath all the drama that is Cinda, she does love her daughter. The police should be able to track down Davidson in the next week, wouldn’t you think?”

“Probably, but that’s not something I can guarantee. My guess is that he’s pretty much forgotten about Kali and is now gunning for you. But if the opportunity to grab her again presented itself, I don’t doubt he’d take advantage. So it’s still better to have her out of his reach.”

“Okay, it’s settled. I’ll call Cinda after dinner.” And wasn’t he looking forward to that conversation?

He reached for her hands and pulled her up, using just enough force so she landed against his chest, right where he wanted her. “Hello there.”

“Um, hi?”

“Is that a question?” God, she felt good in his arms. “Can I kiss you? I need to kiss you, Delaney. Please say yes.”

“I don’t want to say yes… That’s not true. I want to, but I don’t want to want to.”

“Sounds like permission to me.”

Shocking him, she put her hands on the back of his head and tugged, pulling his mouth down on hers.

This was the Delaney he knew and loved, the one who didn’t hesitate to go for what she wanted. He ached to take over, to let out the caveman that needed to claim her, but he sensed that she needed to be in control. So he reined in his inner animal and put himself in her hands. He also wanted to see how far she would take them.

Chapter Fourteen

Harry pushed against Zach’s chest, forcing him to sit back down on the desk, and then she wedged herself between his legs. She knew he was holding back, letting her have control, and that was downright sexy. He put his hands on her hips, digging his fingers into the denim of her jeans. She would allow him that much.

As the years since losing him had passed, she’d convinced herself that her memories of his kisses were better than the real thing. She’d only been fooling herself. When she traced the seam of his mouth with her tongue, he immediately opened for her. He tasted like mint and smelled like spices, his scent familiar yet new.

She used to love to sit on the bathroom counter and watch him shave. There was something intimate and sensual about seeing a man shave, wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist and hips. More times than she could count, they’d both end up smeared in shaving cream.

“Stop looking at me like that,” he would say.

“Like what?” she’d say as she attempted to appear innocent.

His gaze would narrow, and the hint of a smile would play on his lips. “With those hungry eyes that look like they want to eat me up.”
