“So, give me the lowdown on the girl you brought back,” he says once I’m sitting in one of the chairs in front of his desk.
Theo is content right now, which is a good thing because I have no clue how to mix up a bottle for him. Hopefully, Doc won’t take too long because I know how piercing his wails can get.
“Don’t have a ton of information,” I admit. “We were making our way home on one of the back roads because there was a bad accident on the interstate. Saw something in the tree line and decided to check it out.”
“What did you find?” he asks.
“Found her, with the kid strapped to her chest, beaten to hell and back. Not sure how long she’d been running from whoever did that to her, but she said she couldn’t run any more. Since we don’t put up with fuckers like that, I brought them home,” I admit.
What I don’t say is that she intrigues me. As a biker with one of the most well-known clubs in the country, getting my dick wet isn’t difficult. Women seem to flock to us like flies to honey, and it’s even worse when we help Issy at the rodeos. Hell, we tend to piss off a lot of the cowboys and wannabes, not that any of us give that first fuck what others think about us. Protecting Issy is something we’ve always done, even before she became Rio’s ol’ lady. The fact that I spent my teen years helping with the horses means that now that Gage is no more, I often go whenever Rio’s not available due to club shit. Not only can I protect her, but I’m also able to take care of her babies.
And even though Livy is so beaten down it’s not funny, there’s something about her that called to me the minute I saw her one eye peering up at me from where she’d fallen. I know she needs help and plan to get it for her, even though she’s not my ol’ lady.
But she could be once she heals,my mind whispers. I shake my head; I’ve never had aspirations of having an ol’ lady, not after how my incubator treated my father. Still, growing up here, I’ve had plenty ofgoodexamples of how a relationship should go, so maybe I won’t fully discount the possibility.
“She gonna bring trouble?” he questions.
“I’ve got no fucking clue, Rio,” I reply. “We found her about two or so hours north of here and I don’t have the first idea where she came from. But if the fucker who did that to her shows up, he won’t be a problem for very long.”
One of my jobs as the Enforcer for the club is to protect my brothers. By extension, that includes anyone who lives and works on the ranch, since it’s one of the club’s businesses. I’ll use any means necessary to ensure the safety of everyone that’s under our umbrella. And while I wish where she came from wascloser so I could ensure myself that he was taken care of and no longer a threat to her or this little man in my arms, if trouble comes knocking, I’ll be answering the door.
“Get Pokey to run a check on her,” he instructs. “Also get the name of whoever fucked her up so we can check into him as well. I don’t want any loose strings when it comes to an unknown.”
“Will do, Pres,” I reply. “I know she needs help. Her attitude is one of being totally beaten down. I also know she can’t stay here since she’s not an ol’ lady or a club girl.” I feel a growl rising in my chest atthatthought because she’s mine. I don’t even question it knowing that she’s got to heal, both mentally and physically. How I’ve gone from thinking there’s no way I’ll ever settle down to considering Livy as mine is beyond me and it’s something I refuse to look at too closely right now.
“Stop grumbling like a wounded grizzly bear,” he teases. “Issy found some places to get her help, Bam. One of them is an inpatient place.” When I go to protest since she’s got Theo, he holds up his hand. “Let me finish,” he demands. “They allow for mothers to have their children with them.”
“Good. I’ll go check to see if Doc’s done with her yet. She’s completely wiped out, so I think tomorrow’s soon enough for her to make the calls to get her into whatever place Issy found,” I say.
“Works for me,” Rio replies.
With Theo firmly ensconced in my arms, I head to the infirmary to check on Livy. As I breach the door, I hear Doc muttering.“Doc? What’s going on?” I ask. I’m trying not to blow a gasket when I see that Livy’s no longer where I left her.
“She’s in the bathroom giving me a urine sample,” he replies. At my raised brow, he smirks. “It’s like that, huh? No, getting all the things done in an effort to get some kind of baseline for her. She hasn’t had any kind of medical care for the past few years.”
“Not even when she was pregnant?” I question. I may not know much about women who are carrying babies, but even I know they need monitoring and vitamins and shit.
“No,” he grumbles. “She did take prenatal vitamins she bought at the drugstore, but they weren’t the ones we prescribe which tend to have more of the supplements and nutrients necessary, but she had no blood work drawn, no testing for possible gestational diabetes, absolutely nothing.”
“Jesus fucking Christ,” I bite out. “What about Theo?”
“He’s been regularly seen at the clinic where she was living. I got her signature on a medical records request and will order those notes, so we have them. He seems to be relatively healthy, though,” he says, soothing some of my fears while taking the baby from me. “Look at how bright eyed you are, little man,” he murmurs as Theo coos. “Good, healthy weight too. She says he’s three months old and from a book she got from the local library, he’s on target with his milestones.”
I’m still stuck on the fact that she had zero preventative care while she was pregnant. “Did she have him at the hospital at least?” I ask.
The glare he sends in my direction nearly has me taking a step back. “She gave birth at home in her motherfuckingbathroom,” he grinds out, his jaw so tight I can see where he’s clenchinghis teeth. “What’s worse is she was on bedrest by then because she had to go to the hospital when she was spotting. Her blood pressure was high, and they put her on bedrest. Apparently, the night she went into labor, it was faster than she anticipated once her water broke. The sperm donor was out with friends and wouldn’t answer his phone when she tried to call and text him, so she went through it all by herself, then called for an ambulance to take her to the hospital so the baby could get checked out. I’m ordering those records as well to see if there’s anything that’ll help me with respect to her overall health.”
“Jesus fucking Christ,” I growl out. “She’s a little slip of a thing.”
“Tell me about it. She’s a good twenty to thirty pounds underweight, brother,” he quietly advises just as she steps out of the bathroom.
I’m still stuck on the fact that she gave birth by herself. While I already knew she was tiny, seeing her now that she’s been cleaned up, I can tell what Doc means. The bones in her neck and wrists are prominent, well, the right one, that is, since he already has the left one in a cast.
“Is Theo okay?” she asks, hurrying up to me.
“He’s fine, Livy,” I reply. “Anything else, Doc?” I ask, turning back to him while taking Theo back from him. With her arm in a cast, I don’t want him throwing her off balance.
Yeah, that’s something else I’ll examine later. Or maybe never. Because the little guy feels like he’s meant to be in my arms.
