I was not convinced that he didn’t know he was staring.

Kris chuckled after we passed him. “He’s always staring at you,” she whispered. “Everybody knows it. That’s another thing. Deb reported it to the chief because she thought it was affecting his interaction with you, and she said the chief just blew her off. It’s like he has so much power, but he’s only an attending.”

“But I heard his reputation precedes him,” I snuck in.

We were almost at the care station, and Dr. Flanigan, the primary surgeon, was about to lead the team up to the patient’s room.

“His reputation? No one knows his reputation,” she said.

I chewed on her final words through our consult then the prep for surgery and even during the procedure. I wondered if Kris or anyone else knew that Sparrow was loaded or had rich friends in high places. I was determined that the next time he and I were alone, I would get some answers.

Night call was hot.We were feeling the pinch of the resident and nurse shortage, but another guy fell off his motorcycle, and I had to clip a brain bleed, irrigate, and remove the skull to relieve the swelling all in one surgery. Then, an hour before my shift was to end, another guy had a motorcycle accident and needed the same procedure. By the time I made it to the condo, I could barely keep my eyes open. I didn’t even look for Sparrow. Instead, I dragged my tired, aching, and hungry body to the bedroom, fell facedown on top of the bed, and was asleep shortly thereafter.
