He sniffed at me and then followed her.
Jamison walked over and wrapped his arms around me. “Good job, babe. That was brave of you.”
I gazed deep into his eyes. “Was it?” I said quietly.
Jamison planted a tender kiss on my parted lips. “Very.”
That one soft kiss led to the next and then the next until we were engaging in a scintillating and hungry kiss. We’d lost our heads, forgetting we were in my client’s house and I’d just informed her that her loser boyfriend used to be my loser boyfriend.
Eden cleared her throat. Jamison and I whipped our attention in her direction. She was grinning as if all was well in her world. “That was hot, by the way.”
My eyebrows pulled. “Is everything okay? We can end the job, and you wouldn’t have to pay for the work we’ve already done.”
Her hand shot up. “No way. I’ve been waiting too long for this, so let’s just…”
A cell phone rang. I knew it wasn’t mine because the ringtone sounded like one of those old bulky landline telephones. Jamison jumped as he released our embrace and dug a phone out of his pocket. I tried to sneak a peek at the name of the person who was calling, but the way he held the device prevented me from seeing.
“I have to take this.” He planted another quick kiss on my lips and then walked swiftly out of the room, leaving me and Eden alone. It was the moment I’d dreaded.
“I promise you, I didn’t know the two of you were involved before I saw him here,” I said.
“I believe you, Bryn.”
I pressed my lips together, waiting for her to say something more about the talk she’d just had with Dale.
Eden swung her arms nonchalantly. “Should we get back to it?”
It was evident she was trying to hide her anxiety. I was never one to stuff my emotions, but after yesterday with Eden, I suspected she was that type. That was why I’d chosenLet there be lightfor her theme.
I figured she would never ask the questions she needed to about my relationship with Dale, and he would never tell her. I folded my arms and started from the beginning, telling her how Dale and I had met at a function in Washington, DC. We bonded over marijuana in a stall in the men’s room. He asked me if I gave blow jobs, and I told him to go fuck himself. He liked my answer, and I liked that he thought I was joking. I wasn’t. I told her that the relationship had been on and off.
“Wait.” Her mouth agape, she turned to gaze off down the hallway and then back at me. “He’s your boyfriend in the book,The Dark Christmases?”
I tried to hide my disappointment that she’d read the book. Of course she had. If I were her, I would have read the book too.
“Mm-hm.” I cleared my throat.
She slapped a hand over her mouth and then grunted thoughtfully. If her response hadn’t been about my relationship with Dale, I would have asked for an explanation for her reaction. But I didn’t want to know.
“By the way, I didn’t know either,” she finally said.
It took a moment to remember what she was referring too. “Oh. I didn’t think you did.”
“And, um, I don’t care if he was with you and you were with him. Actually, I think it’s pretty hot, well, because you’re pretty hot.” Her eyes dipped down to my tits. “And I’m into threesomes, just in case that’s something you want to know.”
I chuckled, shaking my head adamantly. “I’m not sharing Jamison, so…”
Eden swung her tightened fist. “No?”
I sniffed. “No way.”
We laughed and then went back to work. When Jamison joined us, he seemed distracted for a while. But once Eden pitched her plan to him about us having a threesome, he laughed. I was learning something about Eden. She might be the woman to give Dale a taste of his own medicine.
We madeit to the second level of the home, finishing up what we’d started the previous day. Eden and I agreed that we should wait until my assistants arrived with swatches from vendors to move forward on ordering furniture. We finished earlier than we had the day before, and since it was a few minutes before four o’clock, she asked if we’d like to stay for an early dinner with lots of liquor. Her eyes were fixed on Jamison when she made the offer. Dale hadn’t made an appearance since I’d revealed our secret. I wasn’t surprised. Whenever he was hurt and angry, he liked to go off somewhere and lick his wounds. There was no way he would want to sit down and have a meal with Jamison and me. It would just be Eden making moves on Jamison all night long.
“Not today,” Jamison said, watching me closely. “We have other plans.”
“Mmm,” Eden said as if she was eating a delectable dessert. “And again, that sounded so hot.”
