“Maybe?”

“As I said, when I asked about the Groves, it didn’t go so well. But I think we need them to make this work. I mean, this can solve all of VTI’s money woes. And I know somebody who knows somebody at GIT who may be able to broker enough peace between our companies to get this done.”

Whew, that was a mouthful. But I’m standing firm, showing no sign that I doubt this could happen.

“His name is Killian Masters. Get a meeting with him, and show him what I showed you. If he’s impressed, I’ve heard he has serious sway with Max Grove.”

Mason’s hands are steepled in front of his face as he shakes a leg contemplatively. “Killian Masters? I never heard of him.” He’s looking at me with one eye narrowed.

“He’s captain of products and technology. He doesn’t come out much, but he’s the man that says yay or nay. I heard Max Grove puts a lot of faith in him.”

Now Mason is fully frowning. “How do you know all this?”

“It’s my job. It’s what you hired me for—to know those kinds of people. If you want a place at the top, then you can’t ignore GIT. You can’t beat them in a footrace. Maybe the families can quarrel, but the businesses shouldn’t. Don’t you think?”

Again, he’s studying me thoughtfully. “Killian Masters, huh?”

“Yes. Killian Masters.”

“And you have his contact information?”

“I’ll send it to you.”

He drums enthusiastically on the arm of his chair before standing. “Then I’ll contact him. What the hell. It can’t hurt.”

Yes!

I wrapup my meeting with Harv, who just played me the latest version ofShop-a-Lot. My team made the game more than I could have ever imagined it to be. There are already three hundred department stores and malls involved. The game is going to be huge.

When I make it back to my desk, I check the messages on my phone and see that I have a text from Hercules. My heart dances with excitement. Good or bad, I’m just happy to hear from him. It reads,You have a birth control appointment with Dr. Lam at 4:40 p.m. Mt. Sinai Clinic. Room 1013.

My mouth falls open in shock.Did he really make a doctor’s appointment for me? Who does that?

“Everything okay?” Lake asks.

I look up from my phone. Realizing how stunned I must look, I force a smile. “I’m fine.”

“You don’t sound like it.”

There’s no way I’m telling her that Hercules made a birth control appointment for me. It just seems so wrong.

“I just gotta—” I start tapping out a reply:No, thank you. I’ll make my own appointment with my own doctor.

I’m not able to look up before my phone beeps:This afternoon?

The good news is he’s pressuring me to get birth control so we can have sex without worrying I’ll get pregnant. I mean, having a child would be a big mistake, especially while our families hate each other. But the definition of bliss would be having children with Hercules Valentine. In any case, the fact that he reached out confirms that we’re still on. We’re a couple—kind of.

I’ll see,I tap out.

I look up at Lake, who’s staring at me incredulously. Before I can say something to her, my phone dings again:Just go to the appointment I made for you.

I can tell he’s frustrated. I’m shaking my head when I type,My boyfriend isn’t going to make a birth control appointment for me.

My finger hovers over the send button as I ponder the fact that I just referred to him as my boyfriend. My heart is beating like crazy. How will he respond to that?I’m curious. I’m stirring the pot, but I don’t care. I press Send and look up at Lake, who’s grinning from ear to ear.

“You and the demigod, huh?”

I beam and shrug. My phone chimes:If you can’t get an appointment with your doctor today, then go see Dr. Lam. Deal?
