“Because I’m smart.”

I close my eyes and shake my head. “That makes no sense.”

“I’ll find a way.”

“A way not to marry your cousin so that your family can be paid more money from the Lord Trust?”

“Yes.”

I feel like nudging him in the chest and pushing him away from me. “Do you have a solution?”

Tension comes to his mouth. The way he’s looking into my eyes changes. I think I’ve hit a nerve.

Finally, he pushes himself away from me and sits where he’d been before trying to tempt me into sex. “Not yet.”

I close my eyes and inhale deeply through my nose. I’m not sure what just happened. Scratching the back of my head, I’m certain it’s time for logical deduction.

“Okay, Hercules, do you really want to be my friend, or is all of this about you trying to seduce me?” I keep my expression serious, showing him that I’m not playing games here.

He’s silent, watching my face. “Both,” he finally says, appearing just as serious as I am.

I sigh with relief. “Well, sex is not an option as long as you’re engaged.”

“That’s clear.”

“So, do you want to stop hanging out?”

He barely shakes his head and whispers, “No.” Then he clears his throat. “I don’t ever want to stop hanging with you.”
