I steal a glance at Clive, who looks disoriented by the conversation between us. I don’t think he could’ve ever guessed my parents would hammer down on me so hard. Or maybe he did.

“The time has come that you behave as though you are aware of who you are,” my dad says. “You will no longer traipse around this city unaware of the dangers of having our kind of wealth. You must move back into this penthouse. It’s nice. You have five-star amenities. It’s all free.” The rough way he says that makes their penthouse sound more like a jail than a resort.

“But it’s not mine.” My voice sounds small, powerless. However, there’s one thing I know for sure—I’m not moving back into this place.

“Tell her the rest, Xander,” Heartly says right on cue.

“We’ve hired a new PR director. You’re moving back to product development.”

My heart drops to my feet as I gasp. “What?”

“It’s time you stop stalling,” Xander adds.

“Are you firing me?” I cry.

“If you want to work for GIT, then you’ll be head of TRANSPOT development. Clive, explain why,” my dad says, barking orders at our dinner guest too.

As I listen, I’m seething and figuring out what to do next.
