If it’s the last thing I do, I’m gonna save this woman.

Ever since my fiancé died in a car crash five years ago, I’ve been trying to find meaning in my life.

Maybe this is it.

Maybe this is my destiny.

“You ok?” she asks.

I shake my head. This isn’t the time for daydreaming. Whatever happened, this woman is lucky to be alive. It's my job to bring her to safety.

I take her hand and look into her deep, green eyes. “I should be asking you that question,” I smile. “There anyone else here with you? Are you hurt?”

“No,” she bites her lip. There are tear stains running down her cheeks, but her eyes are dry. Focused and determined. This woman is brave. “I’m all by myself.”

“Good.”

“And I don’t think I’m hurt," she says. "Just scared."

Her breath quickens. Her eyes dart from left to right. Her fingers tighten around my hand.

Somewhere in the distance the sound of a tree falling booms loudly.

“Oh, God,” she moans. Her chin starts to wobble uncontrollably. If I'm not careful, she's likely to fall into shock. “I’m trapped. I’m fucking trapped and there’s a forest fire and I’m gonna die here under a big pile of stupid wood and now you’re gonna die too because you’ve come to rescue me and I’m sorry, I’m so, so sorry, I didn’t mean to bring you into this mess.”

“It’s okay.” I squeeze her hand gently, stroking her skin with my thumb. “You’re not gonna die. Not if I have anything to do with it.”

“You promise?”

I flip up the cover of my helmet so she can see my face. “Yes,” I say. “I promise.”

My foot hurts.

I take a deep breath from the oxygen mask and suddenly I feel like I’m floating on cloud nine.

Woozy.

Kaiden squeezes my hand. I turn my head and look at him. I feel like I’ve entered a marvelous, magical dream world.

Why is he still wearing all his clothes?

He’s so damn hot. I’ve never met a man as good-looking as Kaiden. He probably has a wife, though. Or a girlfriend.

Either that, or he’s gay.

All the best men are taken.

“My foot.” My voice sounds strange. Like I’m talking in slow motion. I can feel tears running down my face, but I’m not sad. In fact, they feel kind of nice. Like rain on a hot summer’s day. Maybe I’ll lick some off my finger and they’ll taste like chocolate chip ice cream. “Am I going to lose it? Does it need to be amputated?”

Kaiden laughs. “Nah, it’s only a sprain. You’ll be as good as new in no time at all.”

I rest my head back on the pillow. We’re in the ambulance together, waiting for the EMTs to finish treating other people who have scrapes and cuts and burns and bumps.

“You saved my life.”
