Myles put the spoon and bowl aside with a sigh, “It’s hot in here and I can’t stand the thought of adding more layers so I took one off. It’s not that big of a deal.”

“It’s not exactly sanitary.” She pointed out, “Does my dad know you cook half-naked?”

“I’m not rolling out dough with my abs so how about you lay off?”

“How about you put your shirt back on?” She countered.

His head tilted slightly and she realized he’d also taken off his glasses and those intense seaglass green eyes looked straight into her soul when he spoke quietly, “Tell me why it bothers you so much and I’ll think about it.”

“It doesn’t bother me.”

“Seems like it does.”

“God.” She groaned, wanting to throw something at him, “You’re doing this on purpose aren’t you?”

“Doing what?” He stepped from behind the island to move closer to her but she sidestepped further away, trying to put the large counter between them again.

“You’re trying to get under my skin.”

“I never had to try all that hard.” His lips twitched. “You used to love the way I pushed all your buttons.”

“That was a long time ago and I don’t find you amusing anymore.” She stepped back when he came closer again but he only grinned.

“Sure you do. But I think you’re being short-tempered because it’s so hot in here. You know, you could take your shirt off too if you want.”

“Stop it.”

His lips curled and so did her fists, “Stop what?”

“Flirting with me.”

“Is that what I’m doing?” He was still moving towards her and she was still backing away, trying to keep space between them.

“Yes. You’re flirting and I already told you that I have a boyfriend.”

He narrowed his eyes, “You lied.”

“No I didn’t.” She snapped automatically but Myles was shaking his head.

“Yeah you did and you’re still lying now.”

She opened her mouth to argue even though she realized that despite the years and the distance and the hurt between them, he could still read her like an open book. “Stop acting like you know me.”

“I do know you, Lil. I always have. No amount of space or time can change that, not when it comes to me and you.”

Lily had reached out for a weapon to use against his onslaught of truths too dangerous for her to consider and her hand closed around a sauce pan full of mashed blueberries readyfor the pies he’d been making. She held it up when he took another step closer.

“Stay where you are or I’ll throw this at you.” She warned.

Myles chuckled, “Do you really not trust yourself to be this close to me, Lil?”

“I’m warning you.”

“No, you’re threatening me but it’s not a threat you’ll follow through with because I know you and the Lily Montcrief I know would never defile her father’s kitchen by starting a food fight.”

Lily’s heart was pounding in her ears, “I already told you. You don’t know me. And I think you’ve forgotten a key detail.”

“Oh yeah? What’s that?” He took another step closer to her and her grip tightened on the bowl.
