“It is all right.I have you.”His deep voice rumbled through me, almost felt more than heard.
He tipped my chin up until our gazes met, and the concerned look in his eyes broke open something within me.All the worry of the past few days burst out, and I started babbling, “I can’t take it.I can’t stand being away from you!And we’re going to go to war, and we’ll never be together, and I hate it!I just hate it!”
Oh, god, he’ll run now, JJ!You got way too serious too fast!
But instead of letting go of me or closing down, he continued to hold me.His fingers were so gentle when they brushed the tears from my cheeks that I only cried harder.
“I cannot give you up either.”He frowned.“Yet I also cannot bear arms against my own people.”
I nodded, miserable.“I can’t either.”I never wanted to return to our crappy ships, but I couldn’t imagine ever fighting against humanity either.
Billy, who’d bleated a few times and given me a couple of headbutts, decided I’d ignored him for too long and started to nibble on the leg of my jumpsuit.
“Hey!”
His golden eyes met mine. The little stinker knew exactly what he’d done.A bark of laughter escaped me, and I let go of Fin to squat down and scoop the goat-lope up into my arms.“You’re being so rotten.Have you been this bad for Fin?”
Billy bleated softly, nuzzling into my hand and asking for pets.
“He ate a hole in one of the chairs.”
I gaped up at Fin, then back at the goat-lope, who looked completely unrepentant.
“The medical scanner indicated it has not harmed him,” Fin said.“I was able to repair the damage.”
“I can’t leave you alone for a minute!”I rubbed right between the nubs of his boney forehead, and Billy’s small body went limp in my arms.Tears prickled.Oh, god!How could I give up either of them?
I looked up at Fin, letting all of my longing fill my eyes.“What are we going to do?”
He sighed.“We will think of something.”
