No!I shook away the thought.Humans found Sagittarian One first! And we needed it.We didn’t have fancy ships that could travel faster than light. In fact, our ships were in such terrible shape we’d never make it anywhere else.

It was this planet or nothing, and I refused to let it be nothing.

The device seemed built into the floor, but I wrapped both hands around its base and heaved. The forest scene winked out of existence, and the device released with a pop that sent me falling backward onto my butt.I laughed.I’d done it!The cylinder wasn’t even that heavy.

Climbing to my feet, I kept it tucked against my torso.Even if it was nothing more than pretty pictures, it was still tech humanity didn’t have.

Until I got it for us.

A thrill went through me.I’d do it—I’d make a difference!

I trotted for the front door, riding a wave of elation. It slid open.

A dark, hulking figure stood outlined by sunlight, towering over me.

Oh, shit!My heart stuttered and leaped.

The alien rushed forward, his massive body slamming into mine. The cylinder flew from my grasp to clang against the floor. With a tight pivot, he spun us so my back hit the wall.

I gasped, trapped by an immovable wall of muscle.

Sharp, strong features glared down at me, beautiful and furious.

THE MUSCLES OF my back tensed, locking the extra bone plates of my vertebra into one solid column. It protected my spine from damage and stabilized my entire torso, allowing me to withstand and deliver a great deal of punishment. Not that I expected to need such with a human—they were small and weak, after all.

The door slid open, and the last of the sunlight at my back lit her in its golden glow as she froze, her eyes widening.

She was short, as all humans were. Her black clothing—similar in form to mine—did little to hide the exuberant curves of her body. Her breasts were so large that if she had been Varool, she would have been suckling a babe.
