What the hell is he talking about?

“I’m sorry, I think you have the wrong person. My name is Zoe, not Sapphire,” I tell him.

The man’s bushy brows pull together in confusion.

The redhead standing behind the man shakes her head as panic slides across her features.

That makes my stomach drop. Do I know these people? He looks certain he knows me. Why would I know this man? And what agency is he talking about?

The redhead reaches out and tugs the man’s arm trying to bring his attention back to her. Don’t worry, lady, I am not interested in your man.

“Leave me, Ruby,” he grumbles, pulling his arm from her grasp. “I need to see my Sapphire,” he states as he walks toward me.

I’m not his Sapphire. There is no way in hell I would be this man’s anything. He stops right in front of me, reaches out, and cups my face.

“I’ve missed you.”

What the hell.

“I was so sad when they told me you wouldn’t be working there anymore. I miss our times together.”

“Don’t touch me.”

I slap his hand away from me. How dare this strange man touch me. And how dare he imply that I would do anything with him. Ew.

The man’s eyes narrow on me. “What the hell did you say?” His voice is laced with venom.

The redhead steps forward. “Sweetheart, remember Sapphire left the agency. I don’t think she wants you accosting her in the garden at the party. She could be here with someone, and they may not appreciate you touching their property,” Ruby purrs to the man.

He turns and looks at her, his features softening.

As much as I appreciate her defusing the situation, I’m no one’s property.

“You’re right, so right. Please forgive me, Sapphire, sorry—Zoe. I just …” He lets out a heavy sigh. “Miss your company.”

That confession is filled with lust, desire, and need. I don’t understand what he is talking about. There’s no way in the world I would ever be with someone like him. He’s old enough to be my father.

Ruby grabs the man’s hand and rubs it over her breasts, which are pouring out from her elegant red gown. “Forget about her, you have me now, and I for one, am happy to be in your company.”

The man smiles at her and nods in agreement. “Yes, my precious stone.”

I cringe at his words to her. What does she see in this man?

“Why don’t you run back inside and see if you can find Constantine as you need to speak to him.”

The man nods at Ruby’s suggestion. “You’re quite right, my dear. Say your goodbyes to Sapphire and meet me back inside in ten,” he tells her as he leans over and kisses her passionately.

Ruby hums with appreciation at his kiss.

I want to be sick over it.

“See you around, Sapphire,” the man says to me before he walks away back through the gardens.

When he’s finally out of sight, the redhead turns to me, and she looks freaked out.

“What the hell, Sapphire. You’re supposed to be dead.”
