This is my chance. I hate what I’m about to do, but Amber and Beck’s lives are in danger. If Hunter survived whatever Amber did to him, the first place he’ll look for her is right here in Divine.

Uncle Joe’s cabin is a different story. It’s tucked up in the mountains and hard to find, even with directions.

Beck is strapped in, and I’m ready to go. I start the car and back it down the driveway, almost getting away when Mom comes out the door.

“Where are you going?” she yells, chasing the car.

I roll to a stop, then put the car in gear. “I lied to you. Beck’s mother wants me to bring him back to her. Gotta go.”

“Wait. Wait!” She runs after me, but of course she can’t catch a car.

I let guilt churn in my stomach a little bit, but it’s okay. Mom will understand. After all, I need to bring a baby back to his mother.

I only hope the weather holds up and I can get up there before the snow makes the roads impassable.

FIFTEEN

Hunter

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. The bitchtook my truck. All my spare traps are in the back, and I got no wheels.

I pick myself up from the snowbank and touch the side of my head. It’s sticky and bloody and everything hurts.

My fingers. Shit. She bit my fingers.

I squeeze the blood from them and kick the fence post. Bitch makes me so mad I want to kill her.

I fed her. I gave her a place to live, and how does she pay me back?

By fucking that stupid bartender and stealing my truck.

Good thing I didn’t break any bones. I go back into the house and smell gas.

Shit. She’s trying to gas me out of my house.

The garage is stinking with gas. I heft the door open, then find a pipe wrench and close off the pipe.

That’s when I see what’s missing.

My black wolf pelt and my beavers and foxes.

Now she’s really making me mad.

I have to calm down and think this through. Pappy always said I fuck up if I get mad. He says the biggest and baddest dudes don’t get mad.

They get even.

Shit. I lost control at the convenience store when I saw Amber. She cared more for that man’s baby than she ever did for me. Barging over to save it.

That pisses me off.

And now? She stole my truck, my traps, and my furs.

She’s a dead woman, and if that bartender is with her, I’ll kill him and his baby, too.

I jump into the shower and wash off the blood and dirt.

After drying myself, I pull my pants from the floor.
