“Probably.”

Moments later, they had two wooden stools in the back of the car and were on their way to the church.

“I think you freaked the assistant out when you swung the stool in the air,” Nix said.

“I needed to know if it was heavy enough.”

“The ninja shout freakedmeout.”

Emmett chuckled. Nix parked by the church, switched off the engine, but didn’t get out of the vehicle.

“You think you can’t go in?” Emmett asked.

“What do you think?”

“Will you try? Please? Because I don’t think you’re bad. Even though I didn’t get the fun in the cinema I was promised.”

Nix’s heart lurched. “Wasn’t it fun later?”

Emmett widened his eyes. “Hot sex, then breath play? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way round?”

“Five times you’ve died. Only three lives left.”

“Iamcounting. So—are you going to risk the wrath of the church or not?”

Nix hesitated, then got out of the car and locked it. His steps slowed as he approached the door.

“You should have brought the stool,” Emmett said.

“Ha ha.”

Emmett looked back at him from the entrance and held out his hand. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

“You really want me to answer that? Spontaneous combustion? Me writhing around in agony? Lightning strike? A chasm opening up to swallow me? I get crushed by a piece of falling masonry?”

“Why would anything bad happen to you? You don’t mean any harm here. If you’re worried stay really close to me.”

“You going to put your wings out?”

“I don’t have wings. Only the senior angels do. Do you have wings?”

“No. Only senior demons do.”

Emmett held out his hand. “Come on.”

Nix sighed. What did it matter anyway? He took Emmett’s hand and they walked inside. He braced for something to happen, his heart was racing, his stomach churning, but the greatest threat appeared to be the good-looking young priest walking towards them.

“Can I help you?”

Nix waited for him to realise he was a demon, but the guy smiled at both of them.

“Yes, please,” Emmett said. “We need two bottles of holy water. We brought containers.”

“There’s holy water in the font. You’re welcome to help yourselves.”

“Thank you.” Emmett tugged Nix over to the font.

“Can I ask why you need it? Is there anything I can help you with?” The priest had followed them.
