Once they’d left the flat, Emmett said, “You do know that Pornhub is the first thing Harry will look at. That or our browsing history.”

“I deleted the history and the cookies.”

“That was smart.”

“Bike or car?” Phoenix asked.

Emmett was surprised not to get a reaction to calling Phoenix smart. “Car.” They needed their four-legged defences, though Emmett wished they’d been able to go on the bike because he wanted to put his arms around Phoenix and hold him tight while he still had the chance.

The house in Erith was dark. They picked up the stools, stuck the holy water in their pockets and made their way to the rear of the line of properties. When they reached the back door, the pane of glass broken by Phoenix had been replaced by a piece of wood. Phoenix knocked it out with his elbow and it clattered to the floor.

“We do the same as before,” Phoenix said. “You stay behind me.”

Emmett nodded.

Phoenix used his phone to light the way and they checked the entire house. No one was home. Then they went over it again more thoroughly. Greyson’s clothes were still there, though since they’d not registered how much was there before, they had no way of knowing if he’d removed any. There was still a toothbrush and paste in the bathroom. But no laptop, no correspondence, nothing personal.

“You think he’s gone to Sophie’s place?” Emmett said quietly.

“It’s possible, or maybe this was never his actual home. There’s nothing else to see here.”

“We could talk to the neighbours,” Emmett said.

“I’m not sure it’s worth the risk. I doubt they’ll know anything.”

Once they were back at the car, Emmett’s heart stopped beating so fast.

“You okay?” Phoenix asked.

“I’ve discovered why I wanted to be an actuary. The only time there was any drama was if I discovered I’d added something up wrong.”

“Did that ever happen?”

“Once. I almost hyperventilated.”

Phoenix laughed as he started the car. “If they’ve run, we’re back at the beginning. They’re just going to do the same thing over again.”

“Yep. Maybe we just have to wait for another call from Tar.”

Phoenix nodded. “Want to go for something to eat in Greenwich?”

“Okay.”

“We’ll leave the car at the flat and walk. I need a drink.”

“We could look into a way to find Sophie’s address.” Emmett chewed his lip. “Is she still selling from that website?”

“Things That Go Bump In The Night? Yes.”

“She might have a physical shop as well.”

“That wasn’t indicated on the website.”

“Even so. We can research the names of wiccans and witches, and ask if they’ve ever bought anything from her. If there is a store, she might live there.”

“That’s a really good idea.”

“Not just good.Reallygood?”
