Emmett eventually emerged dressed, his face pale, his lips pressed together.

“What was that about?” Emmett asked.

“You wanted a fuck. I obliged. You got what you wanted.”That’s not what I wanted to say, but the words hadn’t come from Vin.

“You are such a bastard. How to turn something special into something meaningless. I’ve never…” Emmett let out a shuddering breath. “Thanks a lot for reminding me how useless I am.”

You’re not.But Nix was afraid to open his mouth.

Emmett hesitated at the door. Maybe he expected Nix to say something, to stop him, but he couldn’t.

“Favourite chocolate?” Emmett whispered.

Vin was shoutingMalteserin his head. Of course the bastard would know. “Twix,” Nix blurted.

Emmett’s eyes widened and for an awful moment, Nix thought he wouldn’t leave the room. But he did and the door closed. Moaning in misery, Nix lay down and pulled the pillow over his face.

“You fucking worm,” Vin growled.

Nix flung the pillow aside. Vin was there with him. Not in an imaginary room, this one. He was wearing tight leather trousers and a black T-shirt and he looked like that straight American actor Nix fancied. Nix swallowed hard and closed his eyes.Go away.

“Open your fucking eyes!”

Nix could feel Vin up close, his hot breath hitting his cheeks.

“Don’t make me tell you again!”

He wasn’t there. He couldn’t be there. If Nix didn’t look at him, then he could pretend everything was okay. This was a dream.

A hand wrapped around his throat and squeezed hard enough to stop Nix breathing.

“Now, open your bloody eyes.”

Nix opened them.

“You drove him away. Get him back.”

Nix physically couldn’t breathe. Vin was going to kill him. He’d no sooner had the thought than Vin released him. Nix sucked in air, gulping to fill his lungs.

“You let them go,” Vin snarled.

Nix knew exactly who Vin meant bythem.

“Interfere again and I’ll drag your angel to Hell. Do you understand?”

The door opened, Tar and Emmett walked in, and Vin vanished.

“Hungry for…?” Emmett asked.

“Maltesers.”

Emmett threw himself at him and hugged him tightly.

“I’m sorry,” Tar said. “I didn’t think he could bother you here.”

“I think he’s getting stronger,” Nix said. “He felt more…there…than he has before.” He patted Emmett on the back. “He’s angry because we released those inbetweeners.”

“Emmett, go back to the flat,” Tar said.
