“I don’t want to leave Nix.”
“He needs to rest. He won’t rest if you’re here.”
Emmett’s shoulders dropped. “Okay.” He gave Nix a soft kiss on the lips and pushed to his feet. “Hot, yes?” he mouthed and smiled.
Nix nodded but he couldn’t smile.
When Emmett and Tar had gone and the door was closed, Nix swallowed hard. At least Emmett didn’t think he was a complete bastard. He took off his jeans and crawled into bed with his phone. He waited until he thought Emmett would be out of the building, then called him.
“Hotline for sex pests. How may I help you?”
Nix laughed. “You okay?”
“My arse aches.”
“Ah.”
“But I’m okay now I know the last part wasn’t you.”
Except some of it had been.
“Try and get a good night’s sleep,” Emmett said. “Fingers crossed he doesn’t come back tonight. Tar said he’d see if there was anything he could do.”
“Do you like croissants?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll bring some for breakfast.”
“Sleep well.”
“You too.”
Nix didn’t think he would. He imagined he’d lie awake for hours worrying about Emmett and how Vin might hurt him, but the next thing he knew, it was morning.
Six thirty according to his phone.
After a long shower, he emerged from his room to see Matthias leaning against the wall opposite, his foot propped behind him.
“I’m to show you the way out,” Matthias said.
Nix followed him.
“What did you do to get sent to Hell?” Matthias asked.
“Set up a vampire tea party in Death Valley.”
Matthias laughed. He spun round so fast to pin Nix against the wall, that Nix had no time to resist. Matthias flattened his body against his, tilted his head, then sniffed, before he drew his tongue slowly up Nix’s neck.
Nix didn’t move a muscle. Part of him wanted Matthias to bite so he could break his neck. But Matthias let him go and carried on down the corridor.
“You’d let me do that to you but not to Emmett.”
Nix said nothing but the vampire was right.
“Your scent is intriguing.” He paused. “Not as intriguing as Emmett’s.”
This time, Matthias was the one who found himself pinned against the wall. “Touch him and I’ll rip your head off.”
“Sweetheart…” Matthias patted Nix’s cheek. “As if I’d dare.”
He laughed, pushed Nix away and opened the exit door. “Don’t fuck things up or I might dare.”
The door closed him out before Nix could think of a suitable rejoinder. He took out his phone and texted Emmett.I’m off to buy the croissants. Put the coffee on.
