Emmett heard the knock at the door and rolled out of bed. Why was Phoenix knocking? He had a key. He didn’t need to knock. So it isn’t Phoenix. But as he emerged from the bedroom, shutting Cat inside, he saw Harry twisting his hand around the handle of the front door. Emmett didn’t even have time to shoutno!before Greyson and Sophie burst into the flat. Harry cried out as Greyson shoved him aside. Emmett was frantically thinking of what he could do to distract them and get Harry and Rashid to safety, but when Greyson pulled out the knife, he backed away.

“This isn’t a good idea,” Emmett said.

Greyson laughed. “Not for you, but it is for us.”

By the time Emmett had reached the main room, Harry was back with Rashid. Both of them ran at Greyson, but he knocked them aside.

“Where are the rest of them?” Sophie asked.

“The rest of who?” Emmett slid to the other side of the table and wrapped his hands around the back of a chair.

“What the hell are you?” Greyson asked.

Emmett was reluctant to take his eyes off the knife, but he glanced at Harry, trying to tell him that he and Rashid needed to get out of there. Harry gave him a slight nod, but as he grabbed Rashid’s hand, Sophie held up her arms in front of the pair and said a load of words that didn’t make sense. A bit like Latin but not. Harry and Rashid didn’t move. They looked dazed.Oh shit.

“Tell me what are you,” Greyson said to Emmett.

“What areyou?” Emmett asked.

“Sophie knocked you down with the car and killed you. I stabbed you and yet here you are, as if nothing had happened.”

“I wouldn’t say as if nothing had happened.”

“You don’t leave a body behind when you die.”

“I didn’t die. I was lucky no bones were broken in the accident and you didn’t hit anywhere vital with the knife. Careless work.” He was waffling, but maybe if Emmett could protract this, Phoenix might come.

Greyson lunged at him and Emmett dragged up the chair to protect himself.

“Vampire,” Sophie said.

“Let’s see.” Greyson was so fast, Emmett had no time to bolt the other way. Greyson rammed the table into him and knocked the chair out of his grasp. As Emmett doubled over, he felt the blade slice into his arm, then his side. Emmett groaned in pain but managed to get out from where he was jammed, only for Greyson to drag him down to the floor.

The guy landed on top of him, pinning his arms down with his knees. When he drew the knife across Emmett’s throat, Emmett was shocked into immobility. Blood was everywhere, filling his lungs, choking him. And the pain… He looked up into Greyson’s emotionless face. His eyes were black. Greyson brought down the knife again, sawing at Emmett’s neck.Oh God!Now Emmettwantedto die.

He got his wish.

The next thing Emmett heard was Phoenix saying in his ear, “If you have fucking lied to me about the number of times you’ve died, I’m going to be so pissed off with you.”

Emmett opened his eyes.Oh God, that hurts. Everything hurts.

Phoenix sagged. “Thank fuck for that.”

Cat purred in Emmett’s face. Emmett lifted his hand to his neck and felt a damp towel.Ah blood.Even lifting his hand hurt.

“Keep still.” Phoenix lifted the not-very-blood-soaked towel away and put it in a black bin liner. Why wasn’t there more blood? That bastard had slit his throat. Had he gone? Was Phoenix in danger? Phoenix’s eyes widened as he looked at Emmett.

“What?” Emmett croaked. How could croaking hurt?

“Not a mark.” Phoenix ran his fingers over Emmett’s neck. “Apart from smears of blood.”

“Really?” All that cutting and there was no mark? Emmett was nervous about touching his throat, but when he did, it felt okay and he risked swallowing. Not pain-free but at least possible.

“Want to sit up?” Phoenix asked.

“Yeah. But I’m going to need a hand.”
