Phoenix helped him into a sitting position, but had to support him. Emmett felt as if he had no bones. No muscle in his body wanted to work. Even breathing took effort. Cat jumped onto his lap. Emmett wanted to stroke him, but he didn’t have the energy.

“Harry? Rashid?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

“Not here. I’m assuming Greyson did this.”

“Yes. There was a knock at the door. Harry opened it before I could tell him not to.” He groaned. “It was GreysonandSophie. They wanted to know where the rest were. I’m guessing they took Harry and Rashid.”Hurts!

“Want some water?”

“Please.” Why did Phoenix look so worried?

Phoenix had to help him drink. The water soothed Emmett’s throat and he felt a little better.

“Sophie said a spell or something, and Harry and Rashid’s faces went blank.”

“Shit.”

“They asked what I was. Sophie guessed vampire. Greyson hacked at my neck with his knife. Probably trying to cut my head off.” He tried to laugh and Phoenix flinched.

“Hmm.”

Emmett’s stomach and heart changed places. “Oh. Oh fuck.”

He started to shake and as Cat jumped off his lap, Phoenix pulled him into his arms.

“They cut my fucking head off?” Emmett whispered, as if it was the most ridiculous thing to say aloud. It was!

“Well…”

“Did they?” Emmett clung to Phoenix’s shoulders.

“Yes.”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake. How…why… What did you do?”

“After I freaked the fuck out? I picked your head up and pushed it back against your neck, put a towel on top and held it there. That’s what I’ve been doing for the past hour. One towel after another. Once I could see it had all started to knit back together, I cleaned up.”

“You cleaned up? You never clean up.”

“You’d made an awful mess on the floor.”

Emmett laughed and clutched him even harder. “I’m laughing but I want to cry. Greyson is a fucking monster. We have to rescue Harry and Rashid.”

“Yes, we do. But I need to look after you first.”

“I’m okay.” But he wasn’t. “I need a shower.”

Phoenix was staring at his neck.

“You’re freaking me out,” Emmett told him.

“And you’re not freaking me out?”

“I’m the one who had his head cut off.”

“I’m the one who had to look at you with no head.”

“Was I still gorgeous?”
