“Definitely not bought me a Twix?”

“If you can still speak, I’m not fucking you hard enough.”

Phoenix moved faster and Emmett buried his face in his arms. He couldn’t come again this soon, but his cock was swelling.

“You’re mine,” Phoenix blurted. “Mine.”

He came with a long groan, his grip on Emmett tightening as he jetted into his body.

Mine. The word almost made Emmett want to cry.

Phoenix leaned over Emmett’s back and kissed his neck. “I… That was so good. Fuck!”

He pulled out of Emmett’s body and Emmett felt come sliding out of him.

“Want to use the shower first?” Phoenix asked.

“Okay.” Emmett headed for the bathroom, his emotions all over the place because that had been Phoenix pulling back again mentally.

Emmett had let himself get too close, let himself want too much. Now he was going to be hurt and there was nothing he could do. Not love. He wasn’t stupid. Not so fast. In any case, Emmett wasn’t sure he believed in that for himself. He’d thought he loved David, but when his feelings had been thrown back at him, Emmett had convinced himself he’d been wrong. Because if it had really been love, they’d still be together.

It was a hard thing to accept that you’d never been loved. Not even as a small child. Maybe that was why he’d fallen so hard for the first person who seemed to want him, to like him even though Emmett could be a dick.

He tossed the wig aside and reached for the hair dye he’d just bought. He was stupid doing this, but maybe he’d spent too much of his life being sensible.

David had been a sensible choice. A mistake.

Deciding to be an actuary. A mistake, even though he’d liked the job.

Letting Phoenix get under his skin. A mistake.

Choosing not to remember when he got to Heaven… Now he was back to wondering if that had been a mistake or not.

Emmett had just rinsed off the dye when Phoenix banged on the door.

“How much longer are you going to be? Can I come in and have a bath?”

“Yep.” Emmett wrapped the towel around his head, rubbing his hair so Phoenix couldn’t see what he’d done as they moved past each other. “I’ll start dinner.”

“I’ve booby-trapped the door.”

“Great.”

“So you can’t escape.”

“Why would I want to when everything I want is here?” Emmett flinched as he said that but Phoenix made no response.

He reeled in shock when he saw himself in the bedroom mirror. Neon pink spiky hair. Very like the wig. That had been a bit of a palaver to manage because his natural hair colour was so dark. But… Yeah, he looked good. Sadly, the tattoos had gone. He pulled on a pair of shorts and headed for the kitchen.

Before he starting preparing dinner, he set about using everything he’d brought from the occult shop. He wanted to protect the bedroom and the bed more than anywhere else, but he laid a line of salt around the perimeter, and burnt the sage in every corner of the main room and bedroom, luckily without setting off the smoke alarm.

One thing he’d read about that didn’t involve something physical was to create a certain type of vibrational field around both of them. Prior to dying, Emmett would have felt nothing but contempt for that concept and dismissed it as mumbo jumbo. Now, he could see there might be something in it. Demons fed off fear and anxiety. So, the calmer you were, the better. The more filled with—don’t choke on the word—love, the better. He and Phoenix had to believe everything would be all right, no matter how black things seemed. Lots of sex was part of Emmett’s plan.

Once Emmett had the chips cooking, he began writing letters to everyone the murdered guys had wanted him to contact. He figured it wasn’t a good idea to go and see people. It was up to them whether they believed what the letter said or not. Most of the messages had the same core emotion. They wanted to pass on their love and say they were sorry. Emmett sighed. Sorry for dying when it hadn’t been their fault?

He had a few letters done before he had to take the chips out of the pan. Once the oil was reheating, he went to the bathroom door and called, “How do you like your steak?”

“Medium, please. I’ll be out in a few minutes. Unless you want to join me?”
