Nix jerked awake with a gasp. No longer dead.Thank fuck for that. But he was in bed. How had that happened? Where was Emmett? His heart jumped. He threw back the covers and pushed to his feet. There was no mark on his chest. No blood on him or his shorts. Maybe they weren’t the same pair.
He found Emmett asleep on the couch and once he’d got over his relief that Emmett was okay and still there, he smiled. Emmett was wearing those tight jeans and the waistcoat, the book about the Russian lying open on his chest. The tattoos and fake piercings might have gone, but he still looked hot.
Though the expression on his face made Nix swallow hard. Emmett always looked sad when he was sleeping. There was a vertical crease in the middle of his forehead and his eyes were flickering under his lids. The room looked as if nothing had happened. No body, no blood, no Mo, no Greyson. A neat pile of stamped envelopes sat on the table.
Nix perched next to Emmett’s knees, took the book from his chest and set it aside.
“Well done on not getting killed,” Nix said.
Emmett’s eyes flashed open and he smiled. “You’re alive.”
“Sort of. I assume this is the next day not a week later?” It was getting light outside.
“Yep.” Emmett pulled Nix down on top of him. “The pain I’ve gone through wearing these torturous jeans so you’d smile when you saw me.”
“I did smile.”
“And I missed it? Damn.”
Nix settled so that he lay next to Emmett rather than on top of him. “What didImiss?”
“Greyson either got Mo under his control or Mo was already bad. Greyson stabbed you. I stabbed Greyson. Greyson died. Mo attacked me. I made him move on. Greyson stopped being dead. I…handled that, then I called Tar. I cleaned you up. Applied more holy water. Tar lifted you into bed because I couldn’t.He ain’t heavy, he’s my brotherwas clearly a lie. And you died without giving me my chocolate.”
“Why do I sense there’s a lot more to it than that?”
“There isn’t. Not really. I did er… I did go to town a bit on Greyson. But the fucker had killed you.”
“What doesgo to townmean?”
Emmett winced. “I don’t think I want to tell you.”
That’s interesting.“Tell me.”
“I amazed myself.”
“Tell me.”
“I ripped his heart out.”
Nix hadn’t expected that.
“You’re appalled, disgusted and horrified, aren’t you? That fucker wasnotgoing to come back to life again. I just somehow knew it was the only thing to do.”
Nix still didn’t speak.Bloody hell, Emmett!
“I threw up though.”
Nix let out a choked laugh.
“Anyway, Tar and another guy took his body away. I cleaned up. The neighbours have been persuaded no murder took place despite the screaming, most of that was me, and our job is…almost done. Apart from you telling me where you hid the chocolate.”
“Oh.”
“Indeed.”
“Did Tar say anything about what would happen next?”
