Emmett wondered how bad a pain in the heart could get before the organ just gave up and stopped working. He took Phoenix’s hand and let him pull him to his feet.

“No last fuck, but definitely a last kiss.” Phoenix slid his hands onto Emmett’s arse, pulled him in tight and kissed him.

It wasn’t rough or hard or desperate though Emmett had half-wanted it to be. Phoenix rubbed his lips against Emmett’s mouth, teasing the seam with his tongue until Emmett let him in. This was like being kissed by the sun on a cold day, like submerging into warm water in a pool, like a child letting snow melt on its tongue. Emmett’s heartbeat soared as Phoenix explored the ridges and hollows of his mouth while his fingers squeezed Emmett’s backside.

“I love you.” Phoenix whispered the words into his mouth and Emmett caught them, swallowed them and felt them soothe yet break his heart.

When Phoenix finally pulled back, because that was something Emmett would never have been able to do, Emmett gave him a little smile. “I love you too. But you are a complete arsehole for making me do this. I won’t forget.”

Phoenix laughed. “Sure about that?”

“I want you to write your name all over my body and I’m going to write mine all over yours.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

Several minutes later, Emmett had written his name on Phoenix’s cock and Phoenix had writtenNixon Emmett’s. Everywhere had been covered apart from their faces and the soles of their feet. And that was because Phoenix couldn’t keep still. And when they’d taken it in turns as they lay on the bed, to adorn each other’s body with their names, thenEmmett accepted it was time.

“Does that sayarsehole?” Emmett was looking over his shoulder into the mirror.

Phoenix had drawn an arrow to the seam of Emmett’s backside.

“Read all of it.”

“Phoenix’s arsehole.” Emmett gave a quiet chuckle.

Phoenix took hold of Emmett’s hand and pulled him into the bathroom. They’d already put two knives on the floor, and the holy water.

“Remember what we said?” Phoenix dragged his fingers over Emmett’s face and wiped away the tears from under his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You have to help me get this right.”

“I know.”

Phoenix sat in the bath.

“Pass me the knife,” Phoenix said.

Emmett knelt by the bath and handed it to him.

“Any last words?” Phoenix stared at him.

“Where did you hide the chocolate?”

Phoenix laughed. “On top of the fridge. Right at the back. Any other last words?”

“Thank you. Not for the chocolate though I do thank you for that, but I’m not going to be eating it. Thank you for rescuing me. Thank you for being the best man I ever met. Thank you for showing me what love really is. I do love you and I will do everything I can to get you out of Hell. I swear it.”

Emmett leaned over and kissed him as Phoenix drove the knife into his own chest. He felt Phoenix’s gasp, then his last exhale fell into Emmett’s mouth.Oh God.It was hard to keep breathing when Phoenix wasn’t.

It took thirty minutes before Phoenix gasped and opened his eyes again. He looked at Emmett, who’d not moved from his side and smiled.

“Maltesers,” Phoenix said.

Emmett nodded and kissed him.
