“Yes. Kaelip moved back and forth between Greyson and Hell for a while, being told what to do by Vin. All the killing was done with Vin’s knife. Maybe that set alarm bells ringing so that we were brought back to sort things out. They needed an angel and a demon because they didn’t know who should be going where. As it happened, all those who died were bound for Heaven. Even Mo.”

“I thought we’d messed up with him.”

Phoenix shrugged. “I think he was so damaged, it enabled Sophie and Greyson to have a stronger hold over him. Vin wanted all his friends up on the surface with him, using the souls of those Greyson and Sophie killed. We were right about that. But he needed a way to get to the surface himself. The more senior the demon, the harder that is. Vin must have chosen me. Maybe he liked the look of me, maybe it was because I’d not been in Hell long, maybe because he saw something in me that he thought he could use. He connived to get me sent to the surface and slipped into my body as I left. But I was stronger than he’d thought I’d be. So were you.”

Emmett smiled.

“The only thing I got into trouble for was not bringing an angel back when they knew I’d had my hands on you. I think they were just into point scoring against Heaven. But they were more pissed off with Vin than me.”

“Did they hurt you?”

“I didn’t give them the chance. I ran and hid. I was tucked into one of my usual spots when the rock at my back fell away and I ended up here in the sea.”

“In Heaven.”

“Is it?” Phoenix sounded as if he was afraid to believe it.

“Well, it’s not Hell, is it? This is what you wanted your Heaven to be like and my Heaven is anywhere with you. Your perfect day. Mine too.”

Phoenix hugged him.

“I don’t think the sun’s going to come up yet,” Emmett said. “Want to go and see what delights the boat has to offer?”

“I don’t need more than one delight.” Phoenix took his hand. “And I have it right here.”

“Ahh. That almost makes up for you hiding that chocolate.”

“You told me not to let you eat it all at one go.”

“Totryto not let me. But you were supposed to give in.”

Phoenix laughed.
