And an interested cock.Except now he was glad he’d not mentioned that he’d also bought lube and condoms, because Emmett would find a way to spoil the moment. Though it had felt weird buying them when he knew Emmett was lying in a hospital mortuary.
Emmett opened a can and forked the contents onto the saucer. “Cat! Food.”
The cat walked over, sniffed the saucer, but didn’t eat, just wound his way around Nix’s legs, then Emmett’s before returning to the couch. Nix joined him and clicked back onto the nature programme set in Alaska that he’d been watching before dinner.
Emmett settled at the other end of the couch. “We shouldn’t have left Harry.”
“Wedidn’t. I did.”
“I could have insisted you stopped.”
I wouldn’t have listened.
“But you wouldn’t have listened,” Emmett said.
“Bloody hell. You can mind-read too? What am I thinking now?”I want to fuck you.
“He was actually quite useful,” Emmett said.
“Nope that wasn’t it. Try again.”
“Did we remember to thank him? We didn’t find out if the guy who’d killed him was the same one who killed Charlie. Or Malcolm. We should have asked more questions. What if Harry gets…grabbed by whoever’s behind this? I wonder what we should be doing with people we can’t persuade to move on? Do you think there’s a time limit on any of this?”
“I don’t want to spend the evening going over everything.”
“What else do we have to talk about?”
Nix raised his eyebrows. “You can’t read minds then. Pity.”
“One of my lives has been used up. The driver of the car was most likely one of the pair who want the dead to stay on this plane. They won’t know how many lives we have though, will they? We should still be careful.”
“Yep.”
“I don’t think we’re doing a bad job. Apart from losing Harry. Though I think you should keep those descriptions of Hell to yourself. We don’t know where Harry’s destined to end up, but no one would want to move on if they thought they might go to the Hell you describe.”
“Yep.”
“Fine. If you don’t want to talk, I’m going to bed.”
I do want to talk. I want to talk about happy stuff, normal stuff. But Nix couldn’t bring himself to admit it.
When Nix finally gave up on the TV and went into the bedroom, Emmett was lying in bed, reading his book. Nix stripped to his shorts and went into the bathroom. He left the lube and condoms where they were. Now he thought he was an idiot for buying them, though he showered, just in case.
Back in the bedroom, Emmett was still reading.
I don’t want to go to sleep.Thoughts of Vin appearing in his dreams made him swallow hard several times but the lump in his throat didn’t shift. He lay down in the bed by the window and faced Emmett’s back.
“Is it really like that in Heaven?”
“Like what?”
“Like you told Malcolm.”
“I don’t know.”
“You lied?”
Emmett rolled over to face him. “I was told Heaven is what you wish it to be.”
