“Let me look inside first,” Harry whispered.

“In and straight out,” Phoenix said.

Harry nodded and walked through the door. Within a second, he was out again. “He’s there. And someone’s lying on the floor.”

Emmett nodded. “Well done. Now you and Harry back off and be ready to follow him. Watch the windows just in case he goes out a different way.”

“Let me go in instead,” Phoenix said.

“I almost thought you cared then.” Emmett smiled, opened the door and went inside.

The grey-haired guy looked shocked, which at least told Emmett that he hadn’t known about the extra lives.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Emmett walked forward.

“You’re dead.”

“Clearly not.”

“No, you were. You are.”

The guy rushed at him, but this time Emmett was ready for the attack and dodged sideways. Though not fast or far enough, and stumbling over a waste paper bin didn’t help. Something heavy slammed against Emmett’s head and he went down hard.Fuck! That… Oh crap!

Emmett came round to see a concerned pair of dark brown eyes looking down at him. They belonged to a young guy with a rip in his shirt and blood all over his chest. His name badge said,Rashid.Emmett glanced sideways and saw the lower end of a body lying on the floor at the far side of the desk.

“I thought you were dead,” Rashid said.

I was. Again. Shit.“No, I’m fine.”Well, not fine.

The sound of a police siren filled the air.

“I called the emergency services before he stabbed me, but they didn’t get here fast enough.” He crouched down and pushed the hair out of Emmett’s eyes. “Whoa. I can touch you. I can’t touch anything else. I tried to use the phone again after… Hmm…and I couldn’t.”

“You need to move on.” Emmett had to get him to leave before the police arrived because Emmettneeded to leave before they got there. “Hold my hand.”

“Move on where?”

“I’m sorry. You’re dead. He stabbed you through the heart.”

“Duh! I know I’m dead. How come you can talk to me and see me?”

The sirens were getting louder. If he didn’t go now…

“Take my hand.”

“Why?”

Emmett sighed. He pushed to his feet and put his hand on Rashid’s arm.Go!But nothing happened and the sirens were even louder. “I can’t let the police see me. Do you have a hoodie or something?”

Rashid tried to pull one off a hook, and when he couldn’t, Emmett grabbed it. He put it on and yanked the hood over his head.

“Let’s go.”

Once they were out of the office, Rashid took his arm. “This way. It’s a back route and they won’t see us.”

They won’t see you, anyway. But Emmett went with him and when they emerged forty or so metres further down the street, two police cars raced past and pulled up at the car dealership.

“I wanted to tell them who did it,” Rashid said.
