“Why did you choose that for a job?”

“Good at maths, very well paid, and I’m a… I’m someone who manages well on their own.”

“You don’t remember having friends?”

“I had colleagues. They weren’t friends.”

“School friends?”

Emmett exhaled. “Not good friends.”

“No boyfriend?”

“Not when I died. What about you?”

“No. Did you leave a will?”

“Yes. My brother and sister got everything. Did you leave one?”

“No. But there was nothing for anyone to get. Not really.”

“Not your brother?”

“He made his decision to break off all contact a long while ago. I respected that.”

“What did you do for a living?”

“You could try to figure it out. Use your analytical skills.”

Emmett paused with a chip part way to his mouth.

“Ten questions,” Nix said.

“Ten?” Emmett glared. “There’s no way I can work it out in ten questions.”

“Humour me. Try. I can only answer yes or no.”

“Is it legal?”

Nix glared. “Yes.”

“Don’t look so pissed off. The first time I saw you, you were lifting a wallet from a guy’s pocket.”

“An old habit.”

“Hmm.” Emmett turned to him. “You work outdoors?”

“Yes. How did you guess that?”

“You’re tanned.”

“I could have been on holiday just before I died.”

“And toned.”
