“Whoever did this to you will be found and punished. You need to move on.”

“What are you talking about?” the policeman said.

“Emmett’s a psychic,” Nix said.

“You’d better go.” The guy glared.

“We’d all better leave,” Emmett said pointedly. “Are you listening, Trevor?”

There was no audible answer but Nix felt Emmett shake and helped him to his feet.

“Oh God,” Emmett mumbled.

“Don’t throw up in here,” the policeman shouted.

Nix helped Emmett outside and Emmett leaned against him.

“He’s gone?” Nix whispered.

“Yes. Every time it feels as if part of me goes with them.” He took a deep breath.

“You need some water?”

“I’m okay. Thanks.”

“That was weird. Trevor was stabbed, but didn’t come out of his body. We should have found out how Greyson tried to get him out.”

Emmett set off for the bike. “Maybe he did leave his body, but went back into it.”

“We stopped Greyson getting two today. He’s either going to be pissed off or he won’t care because he’s got others we haven’t been told about.”

They got back on the bike and Nix headed for Surrey Quays.

“Where are we going?”

“To buy a chain.”

“We should go to Greyson’s place. Stake it out.”

“We need a plan first.”You need to rest first.

“We need to stop him killing anyone else.”

But then, this would be over and Nix wasn’t ready for that.

They purchased the plastic-coated bike chain and padlock at a big sports store. Nix hoped it would prevent Vin making him hurt Emmett, though it wouldn’t stop Vin coming in the night.

“I suppose there’s no point checking for handcuffs in here,” Emmett said.

“What about a knife?”

“I don’t think I could use one.”

Nix could, but he didn’t buy one. There was little here that could be used as an effective weapon. They didn’t even know that they could hurt this guy. And there was the woman to think about as well.

Emmett was too quiet and it was worrying him. Though part of it was probably his fault. Last night had been… Last night, he’d…Shit!Last night was…And I pretended nothing had happened.

“Want to go to the cinema?” Nix asked as they paid for the chain.
