“For trying to help us,” Rashid said.

“For giving us somewhere to stay,” Harry added. “We’re going to go out for a walk while you eat.”

“Where to?” Emmett asked.

“Just into Greenwich.”

“Take my phone,” Emmett said.

“We might not be able to take that out of the flat either,” Rashid pointed out.

“Try.” Emmett held it out and Harry wrapped his hand around it, then put it in his pocket. “Call Phoenix if there’s anything that worries you. Be careful. Be back before ten. Don’t get into trouble.”

“Yes, Dad.” Harry hugged him. “I knew you cared.” Harry turned to Phoenix. “Any words of advice from Dad Two?”

“Do what the fuck you like.”

“And parent of the year goes to—drum roll—Emmett.” Harry grinned.

Emmett rolled his eyes. “If you think you see Greyson…run first, then call us.”

Harry slung his arm over Rashid’s shoulder and they left.

“Should we have stopped them going out?” Emmett asked.

“We’re not their parents and do you think you could?”

“Probably not. I…”

“What?”

“Nothing.” Emmett envied them. He was sad that their lives had been cut short, but maybe they’d end up in Heaven together. At that moment, he felt more alone than he ever had.

“Mushroom risotto. Smells okay. Want some?” Nix asked.

“Yes. Thanks.”

“I’ll dish it up. Sit down.”

“I suppose we should be worried that the two of them are able to do stuff.”

“But only in here and in the car. Not outside, if the rubbish is anything to go by.”

“That might change. Trying to persuade them to leave if they can touch things outside is going to be tricky. Harry will convince himself he’s coming back to some sort of life.”

“Would you choose that shadow existence over Heaven?”

“Yes, if…”

“If what?”

“It’s not a choice so…”

Phoenix put the food on the table and sat down. “I wonder if there’s something in the way Greyson is killing that stops souls leaving immediately.”

Emmett twirled his fork in the rice. “We’re not sure Greysondidkill all of them. Malcolm Patrick didn’t seem to fit in a couple of ways. He was older and had kids.”

“But Tar gave us his address. How does Tar know when people die?”
