Phoenix sighed, pushed to his feet and walked over to the bar.

He looked so good in those jeans. His arse… Emmett broke off the thought. There would be no more of that, thank you very much.He wanted nothing to do with a guy who helped himself to other’s food or their wallets.

Phoenix came back to the table and picked up Emmett’s book.

“Enjoying it?” he asked.

“Yes.”

Emmett was too polite to continue reading when he was dining with someone, even someone so obnoxious.Hehad good manners. Phoenix was reading his book. He creased the spine. Emmett boiled with fury and snatched it from his fingers.

“Do you mind?” Emmett said through clenched teeth.

“Rarely.”

“Is there any wonder I don’t like people?” Emmett muttered to himself.

“Which people?”

“Any of them, but particularly you.”

The waitress came over with the same noodle dish for Phoenix who smiled his thanks. He groaned after the first mouthful. “So good.”

“Does stolen food taste better?” Emmett asked.

“You’d be surprised.”

“I assume there was money in your folder as there was in mine. Why did you need to take his wallet?”

“Habit.”

“You are revolting.”

“Thank you.”

“It wasn’t a compliment. Get out of the habit. We’re here to do a job. The sooner we’ve done it, the sooner we can…”

Emmett’s fork drooped into the bowl.

“The sooner we get to go back to what we were doing before? Yes, Einstein. Correct deduction. Wow, you do have a brain. Are you in a hurry to go back?”

“No.”

“See? We agree on something important. And we both like the noodles. Two things. And we can both read. We’re going to get on fine.”

Emmett very much doubted it.

They were arguing before they left the pub.

“It’s just common courtesy to return your dirty plates to the bar,” Emmett said.

“Not my job.”

“But we were walking past the spot where they put them. It makes someone’s life easier. And they were busy.”

“Would you have thought that if you’d spilled sauce on your lovely pink shirt and tie?” He raised his eyebrows. “Is that the sort of thing you normally wear?”

Emmett pressed his lips together and walked faster.
