The slight change in her expression suggested Nix had that right.

“What did your sister do to deserve getting sent to Hell?” Emmett asked. “How did you know she’s there?”

Sophie said nothing.

“You might as well tell us because whatever you were planning isn’t going to work,” Nix said.

“Was Alice intended to be one of the demons who came out of Hell?” Nix watched her carefully.

Sophie didn’t answer, but Nix thought he was right. He took out his phone and called Tar.

“Speak,” Tar said in his ear.

“We have one restrained. Sophie Russell.Bump in the Night.Seven Beston Street, off Tottenham Court Road. Whereabouts of Greyson is as yet unknown. We can wait here for him, but we need Sophie gone.”

“Understood.”

Nix slipped the phone back in his pocket and turned to Harry and Rashid. “You need to go too.”

“But—” Harry began.

“No buts,” Nix said. “Did you see what Greyson did to Emmett?”

Rashid nodded. “We couldn’t do anything. We could see, but couldn’t move or speak. It was horrible.”

“We can’t protect you,” Nix said. “You need to leave.”

Harry looked at Rashid. “Okay. You’re right.”

“Cat too,” Emmett said.

“I wanted to be useful,” Harry said. “But I know we’re not. We can’t even touch anything outside the flat, and the car. Well, we can touch each other.” He smiled at Rashid and took hold of his hand.

“You made notes about what the others wanted,” Rashid said. “Will you do that for us?”

Emmett picked up a pad of paper from the counter and a pen. “I’ll do my best to pass any message on.”

By the time Emmett had finished writing, Nix’s throat was blocked. His heart was ready to break. No one was ever ready to die, but to leave the world when you were so young… He looked at Sophie, hoping to see some spark of recognition that what she and Greyson had been doing was wrong, especially after listening to Rashid and Harry, but her face was blank.

Emmett ripped off the sheets of paper and put them in the violin case. He kissed Cat, rubbed his face on his head, then hugged Rashid and Harry. Nix did the same.

“Thank you for Harry,” Rashid said quietly.

“Are you sure?” Emmett raised his eyebrows.

“He’s wonderful.” Rashid blushed.

“Best sidekick ever, right?” Harry smiled.

Emmett chuckled. He held out his hands and Rashid and Harry each took one. Cat stared at him from Rashid’s shoulder.

“Will we see you again?” Harry asked.

“I don’t know,” Emmett told him.

“Oh, you didn’t say you hope not.” Harry smiled. “I knew you’d come to like me.”

“You’ll get them both, won’t you? Put everything right.” Rashid glanced between him and Nix.
