They were only minutes from the flat and Emmett gave a heavy sigh as they pulled into the parking place.

The three of them made their way upstairs and headed straight for the kitchen. Nix jumped when he saw Tar sitting on the couch with Cat.

Tar stood when they walked in. “Report.”

“Don’t you already know everything?” Nix asked.

Tar didn't answer.

“Charlie Rose, Jamie Neeson, Malcolm Patrick, Albert Jenkins all sent on their merry way,” Nix said.

“And this?” Tar looked at Harry.

“You can see me?” Harry rushed at him and threw his arms around Tar. “Someone else who can touch me! I am so happy. Touch me some more.”

Tar hadn’t touched him at all. He had his hands by his sides.

“Harry!” Nix beckoned him. “Don’t piss him off. I think his bite is worse than his bark.”

Harry slipped back to Nix’s side.

“This is Harry Rivers,” Nix said. “When I went to get Emmett from the mortuary, I found Harry there. He’s…interacted with at least one of the people we think are behind this.”

“Why is he still here?”

“I’m not ready to go yet. I’m no trouble. I’m their cute sidekick. They need me.”

Nix and Emmett said nothing.

Harry’s shoulders fell. “You don't need me? But you said I was useful.”

“You were. You are,” Emmett said. “But we’re worried for you.”

“Is the guy doing this a necromancer?” Nix asked.

“Do you think he is?” Tar stared at him.

“We don’t know.” Nix stared back. “You give us an address, but the person is already dead when we get there. How are we supposed to catch this guy?”

“They nearly did today,” Harry said. “He killed Emmett though.”

Tar frowned. “You could try watching, then following him.” He looked at the carrier bag Nix held. “Don’t get too drunk.” Tar walked up to Emmett and stared at him. “Some things can’t be undone.” Then he left the flat.

“What did that mean?” Harry asked.

Emmett shook his head. “No idea.”

“Like knots that have been pulled really tight?” Harry said.

“Probably more like history not being able to be changed,” Emmett mumbled.

“No time travel yet, then.” Harry sighed.

Nix gave a short laugh. “How did Tar know what was in the bag?”

“Who cares?” Emmett said. “Heavy on the tequila and make mine a large one. Use a jug. And not just to mix it.”

“Eat some bread first.”
