“During that time, I was being tested for magic.”
“And?”
“I passed.”
“Do I need to remind you that you’ve been fooled before?”
“Oh no, that lesson’s been burned into me.”
Rendor flinched. “I’m sorry. That was uncalled for. It’s just…” He swept a hand out. “You’ve been so practical.”
While he didn’t say it, Shyla knew he wanted to addup to now. “Fair enough. How about a demonstration?”
He tensed.
“Nothing terrible, Rendor.” She concentrated, collecting her will into one place. Then she pushed it toward him. “I’ll just vanish.”
Gone.
“You’re…” Rendor stood up and reached a hand out in amazement. “I can see through you.”
She increased her effort.
Gone.
“Shyla?” He stepped toward her.
She added another command.
Silent.
“Seven hells.”
She ducked to the side as he swung his hands through the place where she’d just been standing.
“Are you still here?” Rendor demanded.
Gone.
Silent.
Shyla moved to stand behind him.
“Shyla this isn’t funny,” he growled.
She ceased her efforts.
“Where are you?”
“Right here,” she said.
He spun, grabbing for his sword. Except he no longer wore one. “That’s a hell of a demonstration. Did you turn invisible? Is that why they’re called the Invisible Sword?”
She hadn’t thought about it like that, but it made sense. Perhaps Ximen would know. “Technically, I didn’t go anywhere, I just convinced you that I was gone. You need to believe this works because when you’re on a mission with the others, you’ll have to trust them that the magic is working because you probably won’t see it.”
“Can I do it?”
Good question. “I’ve no idea. Perhaps you can be tested after.”
