“We don’t have time to go over his physical appearance. You need to get out of there!” I exclaim.

“I’ll send you a picture of his file in a few seconds,” she says, and we hang up.

A minute later, the attachments come through. I read through his file, going over the same information Aria gave me over the phone. She didn’t include the picture of him, so I’ll have to remember to ask her later. Maybe if I find this Atlas, he could give me more insight on the Sisterhood and fill the gaps in my memory.

Me: Can you meet me now instead? I’ll be at Bean Dream.

Gianis: On my way.

Shortly after, Gianis’s large frame strides into the small coffee shop, and all heads turn to look at him.

Without even trying, he exudes confidence, carrying himself with an air of authority.

“Hey, G,” I greet him as he embraces me in a tight hug. “It’s so good to see you.”

He was in Antium not long ago for business, so I saw him briefly, but it’s been a while since we’ve spent time together one-on-one.

“How’s my girl?” he asks, and I blush.

“I’m great.” I think back to last night and push down the guilt that creeps into my head.

Gianis smiles at me. “Anything new?”

“Well, I just got some interesting info. Aria called me.”

His head tilts to the side. “What did she find?”

“I’d asked her to look in her father’s office and she found a file of some guy named Atlas who spent some time at the Sisterhood while I was there, but I have no recollection of him whatsoever. Have you ever heard of him?”

Gianis tenses for a second, surprise etched on his face. “Aboyat the Sisterhood? But it’s an all-girls institution!”

“That’s what I said!”

“No, I’ve never heard of him. Do we know if he’s still alive?”

“Nope. His file was very limited and didn’t give much other than basic information. There’s no address or phone number. I want to find him, but I have no idea where to look.”

“I can do some digging, but…Peter might know,” he says hesitantly.

I grimace. “You know I just can’t ask mybaba, G.”

Since I’ve been away, my father hasn’t contacted me at all. I was disappointed at first, given he’d reached out to me the first time I left Cebrene. I don’t know what I was expecting from him, but checking in on me would’ve been the bare minimum.

He sighs. “I know, Giegie, but what other choice do you have? It’s been a year, and you haven’t gotten any closer to the truth. You also don’t want me to dig too deep in case I get caught. Maybe you need to switch up the plan.”

I ponder his suggestion.

Gianis is right. I’ve always tried my hardest to stay out of my father’s affairs; maybe I should do the complete opposite.

A spark of clarity cuts through the fog as the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

“Oh, no. I know that look. What are you thinking?” Gianis’s expression turns wary.

“I’m taking your advice. If I can’t find out any information from the outside, I’m going to attack from the inside. My poorbabawon’t know what hit him.” Excitement surges through me.

My entire life has been spent trying to avoid being a mafia princess. Perhaps it’s time I embrace my upbringing and use it to my advantage.

“Are you sure you’re ready to do this?” Gianis asks after I explain what I have in mind.
