Iris’s head shoots up. “What? What did he say?”

“He asked me to coordinate a doctor’s appointment to check if you’re with child.”

“Well, that still doesn’t make up for leaving me high and dry, Lyd.”

“I know, but he cares, Iris. That’s all that matters right now.”

That night, Iris spends it crying herself to sleep.

A week later, Iris still hasn’t bled, so she meets with the Sisterhood’s doctor, who explains that everything they discuss in her office remains private. She takes a few samples of blood and gives Iris some vitamins to take in the meantime.

When Iris gets back to her room, there’s a note on her bed.

Meet me at our spot at nine.

They haven’t spoken in seven days.

Ten minutes before they’re set to meet, she goes to the waterfall where Peter took her virginity. This place means a lot to them. It’s also where they said I love you for the first time. But Iris can’t help but wonder if everything will be different between them now.

To Iris’s surprise, he’s not there when she arrives.

She perches at the edge of the pond and pulls off her boots and socks, dipping her toes in the water.

She hears footfalls approaching from behind but doesn’t turn. He doesn’t deserve her attention.

Peter sits next to her on the grass and, even though Iris can’t see him, she knows the contrast of his big, suited frame againstthe mossy floor looks comical. From the outside, Peter is always cool, calm, and collected, but on the inside, the parts that only she knows, he can be soft, caring, vulnerable.

Iris chances a glance his way and finds him staring at the waterfalls.

He breaks the silence first. “Marry me.”

Her breath hitches in her throat as she almost chokes out the words. “Excuse me?”

Peter turns to face her, his eyes full of determination, gripping Iris’s hands in his, but her fingers remain slack. “I love you, Iris. I always have, since the moment I first saw you in the catacombs. I might’ve not known where our relationship was headed at the time, but now that you are pregnant with my child, I know it’sright.”

Her mouth slackens. “I’m pregnant?”

Peter nods. “The doctor told me right before I came here, which is why I was late.”

Holy shit.Iris is pregnant. She’swith child. Her mind is reeling.

“Are you happy?” Iris asks Peter.

“Ecstatic, louloúdi mou. This was meant to happen. My plan was to marry you and get you out of here once you turned twenty-one. This just speeds up the process a little,” he explains with a soft smile.

Wow. Iris is carrying Peter’s child, and he wants to marry her. Tears form in her eyes.

“Marry me, Iris,” he insists, pulling out a ring from his pocket. It’s beautiful.

Without hesitation, Iris says, “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”
