He pushed his plate back, tossing a napkin onto it and giving me a contemplative look. “Is that a good idea?”
“Probably not. But I’ve never had a bit of good sense when it comes to Sammy.”
“That’s for damn sure.” I chuckled as the server came by to clear our plates, saying she’d be back with our checks.
“Just promise me one thing,” Jason said, face turning serious. “If this thing goes south, promise you won’t run this time.”
“I’m done running. I’m here to stay.”
“Then I hope it works out.”
I shot him a skeptical look.
“I’m serious. You didn’t see him after you left. Whatever Sammy may or may not be, he was fucked up over losing you. The guy was in love. If you two can figure your shit out, I wish you nothing but the best.”
“Thanks, J. That means a lot.” I pulled out my wallet, digging out my debit card to pay my check. “I’m scared.”
“Good. If it doesn’t scare you, you’re not doing it right.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
He shook his head. “You always say that.”
“I wouldn’t if you didn’t always sound like one.”
He laughed. “It’s good to have you back.”
“Same.”

SAMMY
I pulledup to Will’s house just before eight a.m. on Saturday, carrying a cup of coffee for Will and a bag of treats for Goldie. He answered the door wearing a blue T-shirt, joggers, and tennis shoes. Everything fit him like a glove, and I considered shoving him inside, removing said clothes, and having my way with him. But I was determined that we would do this right, and that meant golden boy was getting a date.
Maybe I could have my way with him after.
I handed him the coffee while Goldie tried to shove past him, her nose raised, scenting the treats in my other hand. I opened the bag and held one up, and she immediately sat like the good girl she was. I held the treat out and she gently took it from my fingers, then turned and ran with it back inside the house.
“You’re spoiling her.”
I shrugged, completely unapologetic.
“Is what I’m wearing okay?” he asked, looking down at himself.
Though I’d already taken a moment to appreciate his fine form when he’d opened the door, I allowed my eyes to takeanother leisurely tour from his chest to his toes and back up again.
“Go ahead. Take your time,” he said, crossing his arms and leaning against the door frame. I loved it when he got flirty.
“You asked me to look.”
“I asked about my clothes. I did not ask you to eye-fuck me.”
“Don’t act like you didn’t like it, golden boy.” Unable to resist, I leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips. “You look perfect. And your clothes are perfect too.”
I didn’t think I’d ever get tired of making Will blush. “Grab Goldie’s leash. She’s coming with us.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise but did as I asked, and we headed out to the car. We passed a pleasant twenty minutes talking about our weeks as we made the drive to our destination. When we pulled into the parking lot of Schramm Park State Recreation Area, Will asked, “We’re going hiking?”
