“I’ll be right back, golden boy. I just need to put away the food. Goldie’s right here next to the bed. She’ll keep an eye on you.”
He leaned forward and kissed my brow, and that was the last thing I remembered before I finally succumbed to blissful sleep.

SAMMY
“Hi.”
“Hi.” Will’s smile was soft as it spread slowly across his face. I was relieved to see the haze of pain had cleared from his eyes.
“How long have you been awake?” he asked, his voice gravelly with sleep.
“A little bit.” In truth, I had no idea how long I’d been awake watching him sleep with the sun streaming through the window, catching the ebony, cinnamon, and brandy-colored strands of his hair. I wasn’t used to waking up with someone in my bed. In fact, the only person I’d ever shared a bed with in my entire adult life was Will.
“How are you feeling?”
He rolled onto his back, stretching as if checking in with his body before responding. “Better. Sorry I ruined dinner.”
“You said that a lot last night.”
“Said what?”
“You kept apologizing,” I clarified, brushing a lock of hair off his forehead. “There’s no need for that. I would have done anything just to take away your pain.”
He took my hand in his. “Well, thank you. Though I honestly don’t remember much after I got here.”
“Not a lot happened. You threw up, and then I put you to bed.”
He flinched, and his hand flew up to cover his mouth. “I’m suddenly very aware that I did not brush my teeth last night. Do you have a toothbrush I can borrow?”
“I’ll give you a toothbrush as long as you promise to climb back into bed with me for a little while. I like lying here with you.”
“The things you say… Eighteen-year-old me would never have predicted you’d turn out to be such a romantic.”
I smiled and sat up. “Come on, golden boy. Let’s go get you a toothbrush.”
The moment our feet hit the floor, we were greeted by an excited ball of fluff as Goldie ran circles around both of us, her toenails click-clacking across the wood floor. “I should probably take her outside.”
“Go brush your teeth. I’ll take her out,” I said, reaching for a pair of joggers and a hoodie.
“I know we agreed to get back into bed, but I probably ought to get her home so I can feed her.”
“I can take care of that too. I bought some food for her last week.”
“That was optimistic of you.”
“I’m playing the long game here, Will. I meant it when I said I wanted a second chance.” I nodded toward the bathroom. “There’s a brand-new toothbrush under the sink. I’ll be right back.”
Goldie took longerthan I would have liked going about her morning business because she had to stop and inspect every new scent that caught her nose, but eventually, she got it done and we came inside, where I fed her, then went to find Will.
I heard the shower running and couldn’t help the sinking feeling of disappointment that he’d changed his mind. I tried not to take it personally. He was a very responsible person and likely felt he needed to get to work on time. Not wanting to delay him further if that was the case, I stepped into the hallway bathroom and pulled out a spare toothbrush to brush my teeth while I waited for him to finish.
The water stopped running, but after a few moments passed and he didn’t come out of the bedroom, I stepped back in to make sure there wasn’t something he needed.
I pulled up short when I found him lying in bed, one hand propped behind his head and the other lazily stroking his dick. “What took you so long?”
“I thought maybe you had to get to work…”
