“Jack?” Her mum looks surprised. She picks up the glass in front of her filled with a bright orange liquid; a slice of pineapple and several paper umbrellas hovering around its rim. She takes a long suck on her straw. “He’s staying in Losworth, then?”

“No, he’s selling the house.”

“Oh, where’s he going?”

“I don’t know … I mean, I don’t think he knows either.”

“And why were you fighting about him?”

She considers telling her mum the whole of it, the truth. How she’s just discovered what it truly means to be an Omega. How all this trepidation and uncertainty she’d felt about what she was had vanished the moment she’d felt his knot expand inside her and lock them together, like two halves coming together to form a whole. Nothing has ever felt so right. But she looks at her mum sitting there with a bright red tropical flower pinned above her ear and her girly looking cocktail and she doesn’t think she’ll ever understand this. So she gives her an edited version instead.

“Finn thinks I should stay away from him, because he’s an Alpha.”

Her mum chokes on another gulp of the orange liquid. “Oh yes, I’d forgotten that bit.” She glances at Amy across the screen. “Well, I think your brother is right. You know what Alphas are like. I’m not sure they can be entirely trusted.” Amy fights back the annoyance rising in her chest. Yes, she knows what Alphas are like and they are nothing like Finn or her mum imagine. “You’re taking your blockers and your suppressants, right?”

“Yes.” Not that they seem to be having any effect when it comes to Jack.

“Just stay out of his way then, love. I’m sure he’ll be gone soon enough. There’s nothing left to keep him in the village now is there, poor thing.”

Amy nods and her mum starts to recount the recent sights they’ve visited. It’s an endless list of destinations and activities. She listens politely for a while but she’s anxious to go check on Maddock so finally she interrupts her and cuts off the call. As the screen goes blank, she sighs. Even if everything were to work out with Jack, would her family ever accept her with an Alpha? She’s not sure.

After she changes her clothes, she creeps down the stairs, wanting to avoid another run in with Finn. As she places her foot on the top stair, the smell of baking greets hers and she halts.

Brownies.

They’re her favourite. Finn used to bake them for her whenever she felt sad as a kid or when their parents were out and they fancied something sweet to eat. It’s a peace offering, a white flag. She sighs and goes to find him in the kitchen.

“Brownies?” she says, finding him on a stall in the kitchen, scrolling through his phone.

He peers up at her with sheepish eyes. “I’m sorry I snapped at you.”

“If you save me some brownies, I’ll forgive you anything.” She grins at him.

“Where are you going now?” he asks, a hint of suspicion in his tone.

“To check on Maddock.”

“I went up there yesterday for you. He seemed much better.”

“You did?”

He nods and rubs at his forehead.

“Is everything alright, Finn?” She asks.

“Yeah, just …” His phone pings and his eyes are caught by the new message. “I’ll talk to you about it later.”

“Okay,” she says, leaning over to plant a kiss on his cheek and spotting the bowl on the counter behind him. She dips in her finger and drags it around the sides, scooping up some of the leftover chocolate mixture. “Yum,” she says, plunging her sticky digit into her mouth and sucking.

He grimaces. “You really are disgusting, Squirt.”

“Like you’re not going to sit here and eat all the leftovers as soon as I’m out of the house.”

“Nope, gotta think of my figure,” he says, slapping his flat abdomen.

She pinches his bicep. “Like you need to worry about that, Rambo.”

He lunges for her and she squeals, jumping out of his way and trotting down the hallway, waving over her head as she does.
