She peers out of the dark window, at the desolate scenery and the passing headlights, trying to read the signs. Trying to remember where this highway leads.

But soon the car is swinging off the main road and onto a smaller one and it isn’t until she sees a bunker up ahead, several light aircraft parked alongside, that she understands.

She sits bolt upright, pulling away from him. “Are we flying somewhere?”

“Yep.”

“Where?”

“Vegas. Baby.”

“Vegas?!”

“Ash and Layla are getting married in a few weeks’ time. We’re going to Las Vegas for the bachelor’s party.”

“We?” She scoots away from him. Didn’t they talk about this two days ago?

“It’s just the band, Layla, Kim and my sister Darlia.”

“And a bunch of security, airport staff and people in Vegas.”

“Ash has somewhere private booked.” He wraps his hand around the back of her neck, palm pressed against her gland. “Come on, Omega. I thought you liked a bit of danger.”

She meets his swirling Alpha eyes, luring her in, daring her to say no.

She is tempted. It would be a huge risk. Her blood quickens imagining it.

“Are you chickening out on me?” he says.

She remembers that first time she snuck out of her parent’s apartment, hovering with her hand on the door handle, Nat in her ear. “Are you coming or not, Ruby? Or are you too chicken after all?”

“I’m not chicken,” she says to the Alpha. “But I do have a thing on Friday.”

“We’re coming back Friday morning. It’s just one night.”

“I haven’t brought a suitcase.”

“I have. I packed for us both.”

“Pretty sure of yourself.”

“Yes.”

Can she really get away with this?

The car comes to a stop alongside one of the aircraft, lit up from within.

Las Vegas. With him.

“I’ll come.”

He grins wickedly and opens the door, tugging her out after him into the cool night. She shivers a little, and he rubs her arms, leaning down to kiss her forehead.

Then she stalls. She swings her gaze around, but there’s no one else here. The runway is empty apart from their car and the plane.

“What is it?” he asks. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I just thought …” She shakes her head. It must have been her imagination. It keeps happening. Little hints of that sinister scent.
