As the plane soars over the Atlantic ocean, he dozes in his chair. Flashes of the Omega’s naked body keep creeping into his mind and he has to smother a satisfied smirk from his lips. Perhaps he is a little obsessed. He’s certainly spent more time thinking about this one Omega than he has any other.
She’s just so damn … tasty. And the fact she’s playing hard to get somehow lights every fuse in his body. He’s been famous for a long time now and since making it big, every woman he’s met has been more than happy to fall into his lap. There’s no chase to it any more. No hunt. And there is something inside him that craves it and wants it.
Yeah, he’s happy to play this little game of cat and mouse with her.
A couple of hours into the flight, he pulls out his phone. The others are sleeping around him and the hum of the engine is the only sound.
He sends her a message. And then another. Perhaps he is taunting her a little. Teasing her.
When the plane lands in LA several hours later, he emerges from the stuffy jet and into the hot sunshine. He stands for a few minutes, soaking in the rays. Fuck, he feels good.
“Come on, man,” Hunter moans behind him, giving him a nudge.
He smiles.
Maybe Hunter should try getting laid himself. Maybe it would pull him out of his permanent grump. Ash certainly seems ten times happier these days now he has his Omega and his mate. It’s hard to believe it. His best friend settled. Content to be with one woman for the rest of his days. He’d never have believed it if he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes.
He checks his cell.
He’s not expecting a reply from Ruby. She only seems to contact him when she wants something, and by something, he means him. But it’s all part of the game. The chase.
Except as he slides into the front seat of his car and starts the engine, he wonders if it really is the chase he enjoys, or if it’s something about this particular girl.
Chapter 4
“Are you awake?” a voice whispers in her ear, and Ruby rolls over and opens her eyes.
Nat’s lying in the bed beside her. Her face is bare of its usual makeup and her long shiny hair is loose about her shoulders. “It’s past noon, so I thought I’d better check you hadn’t rolled out of bed and cracked your head on the floor.”
Ruby yawns and rubs her eyes. “One time. That happened one time. And you know that’s why I don’t do vodka shots anymore.” She yawns again.
“Okay, but there was also the time you passed out at Ryder Odwin’s house party and I found you curled around his fish tank.”
“That was six years ago. Besides, I’ve done my fair share of rescuing you.”
Nat arches an eyebrow, but a smile twitches on her lips. “I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.”
“Hmmm,” Ruby says, waggling her fingers at her. “Just remember you’d have Tod’s name tattooed on your ass if it weren’t for me.”
“It wasn’t going to be on my ass.”
“Still, aren’t you glad you don’t have that jerk’s name permanently inked on your body?”
“Sometimes I think I’d like to tattoo the names of all my enemies on my body,” Nat says darkly. “So I can remember who I need to plot revenge against.”
Ruby tweaks her friend’s nose. “Tod wasn’t that bad. And you don’t have any enemies.”
“Oh trust me, I do.”
Ruby rolls her eyes. Her best friend can be so damn dramatic at times.
“Anyway, I’m just tired.” Ruby says. “It’s been a lot, you know.” Before coming to England for this festival, they’d done a quick promotional tour of Europe plugging their new album. They haven’t been home in six weeks.
“Yeah, it has. But we got to keep the ball rolling while it’s hot. We’re climbing, Ruby, if we stop now, we could roll right back down to the bottom.” Nat swipes a thumb under Ruby’s eye, removing a smear of mascara. “Did you see the size of that crowd last night? I still can’t get over it. And when they started singing our own song back to us!”
“It was amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored with that feeling.” Ruby fluffs up her pillow and rests her hands under her cheek. “You know I was worried it would get old. Like, remember the first time we ever played?”
“Oh my God, in that basement dive back in New York?”
