“Harrison!” she yelps. “I haven’t seen you in ages. Not since last summer.”

His eyes flick towards me and then he drops down onto the sofa.

“How’s it going Soph? You liking university?”

“Loving it. You? I haven’t seen you around.”

“Been training hard.”

Sophia heads over to a cupboard in the corner and picks out some tumblers and a bottle of rum. She pours the dark liquid into each glass and passes them round.

“Rosie,” she tells me, “this is Harrison. Our big brothers are, like, the best of friends. Harrison, this is Rosie. We’re on the same course.”

“Physics?”

We both nod and he whistles in a way that signals he’s impressed.

“Nice to meet you,” I say, taking the glass Soph offers me. The straight rum tickles my nose, but I take a little sip anyway.

Harrison lifts his glass. “To big brothers.”

“May they always stay out of our business,” Soph adds.

Harrison chuckles at that and takes a long gulp.

“So, to what do I owe this visit?” Soph asks him. “I mean, it’s great to see you, but …”

“I’m here on an errand.”

“Oh god. Not my brother checking up on me?”

“No, nothing to do with him. It’s actually to do with Rosie.”

“Me?” I gasp, looking at Sophia. She cocks her head.

“Rosie?”

“Yes, I heard she was likely to be here.”

“Why do you want to see me?” I try to rack my memory. Have I met this guy somewhere before? I’m sure I never have.

“I have an invitation for you.”

I gape at him.

“What? Who from?”

“The Crewwants to invite you to go to their house and hang out.”

“The Crewis inviting Rosie to hang out?”

“At their pack house, yes.”

“Oh my God!” Soph cries, clapping her hands together and bouncing up and down, making the springs of the sofa squeak. “Are they interested in her?”

“Seems she’s caught their eye.”

My gaze swings from my friend to this messenger. I’m confused. What does this mean? Why has a pack I’ve never heard of sent this guy around to ask me to hang out?
