Typical Alpha and his bullshit, unable to let the moment pass without some attempt at pissing over the Omega. She decides to ignore it. She decides if she wins this pitch and this account, she’ll be keeping the hell away from this sleaze-ball. She can feel the way his eyes are slithering over her.

“What a good question,” she says, turning away from him and directing her answer towards Claudia and her director. “I’ve been working at this agency for over six years now, having made my way up the ladder as a junior. I’ve worked for major clients and brands, including Gloss and Interram, and was responsible for Sunsilk’s marketing strategy, which led to a twenty percent increase in sales." She pauses, taking a sip of her water and ignoring the swirling scents of the Alpha that seems to become more pungent by the second. “But the most important thing to tell you about myself is that I love — really, really love — my job and being given the chance to run this account for you, to implement all our innovative new ideas, would be one of the best opportunities of my life.”

Claudia winks at her and inwardly Alice fist pumps.

She’s not sure that could’ve gone any better.

The team is buzzing as they pile out onto the street and then into a waiting taxi.

“I need a drink,” Callum grins.

“Me too.” Anya chips in.

“I guess I owe you all one," Alice says.

They nod at her enthusiastically and she has the taxi pull up outside a bar.

“You go ahead and order,” she says, handing Callum the company credit card. “I just need to make a few calls.”

She walks along the road a little and ducks inside an alleyway, away from the noise of the traffic. First she calls Lisa and recounts in great detail every aspect of the meeting. Lisa seems a little wary and skeptical at first, but by the end she’s caught Alice’s optimism.

“When do we hear?” Lisa asks.

“They said they’ll tell us at some point next week.”

“Great.” Lisa pauses. “Well done, Alice. Enjoy your weekend. Back to work on Monday.”

Alice rolls her eyes, but even Lisa won’t spoil her good mood. She glances down at her phone. Who should she call next? Her mum? Maria?

But the person she really wants to call is Rory. They’ve given up all pretence of not contacting each other and over the last few days especially she’s been spamming him with cat memes. It’s crazy, but she’s enjoying herself too much to care, so she dials him. The phone hits straight through to the answer machine and her heart sinks. Never mind, she’ll just call him later. She speaks to her Mum, messages Maria and then heads into the pub with the others.

Half way through her second drink, her phone beeps and she swipes it eagerly from her pocket.

It’s him and automatically her heart beats a little faster.

Alice, I’m on a job all weekend. I’ll call you after.

Oh. Yes. That.

She’d forgotten about that.

Forgotten or pushed it firmly from her mind. The thought of him with another woman. Of him doing the things he’s done to her to someone else…

She shivers.

The cheerful voices of her colleagues grow louder and louder, her ears buzzing, her vision blurring.

She shakes her head, trying to force away the images that come crawling into her mind’s eye. His hands around a waist, his tongue swiping across a gland, his face terse with effort. His deep groan, his magnetic eyes, his erotic scent.

It feels like a betrayal. Like a slap around her face. Bundling her out of her happy existence, forcing her into reality.

She shakes her head more forcefully.

It’s just his job, Alice. Get a grip. It doesn’t mean anything to him.

But she can’t help herself. Those images intrude regardless.

Because Rory’s not like the others, he’s not just another guy she’s slept with, another Alpha who's helped her out. He’s beginning to feel like hers.
