He stands to his feet, leaving the moaning doctor to his pain. Then he walks to the line of medics.

“What’s been going on here?” They shuffle on their feet nervously, eyes locked on the ground.

I’m guessing it can’t be anything legitimate otherwise they’d tell us straight away.

Axel jams the butt of his gun under one guy’s jaw. He is skinny and sweating profusely, his legs practically shaking. Whatever they’ve been doing, it’s definitely bad shit. The man is terrified. Or perhaps it’s simply the presence of three very pissed off and armed alphas scaring the shit out of him.

“I asked you a question,” Axel says.

“Research,” the man mumbles, swallowing, his Adam’s apple knocking against Axel’s gun.

“What kind of research?” Connor asks.

The man clamps his mouth shut and closes his eyes as if he’s waiting for the bullet to his head.

What the hell?

I want to get to the bottom of this. But like I told the others, Bea is our priority here.

“Do any of you know where the omega is?”

“No, a couple of the orderlies went to fetch her back,” the medic on the floor says. “She can’t have got far. The place is locked down.”

“And yet we got in.” Axel smirks. He glances at me. “Let’s keep looking. Connor, you stay here.”

“They’ll be coming,” the man with his eyes closed says, shaking even harder now.

“Shhhh,” the man next to him snarls.

“Who?” Axel snaps, “who’s coming?”

But the medic doesn’t have a chance to answer, because from behind us we hear the whistle of bullets.

Lots of bullets.

All flying our way.

We sprintdown a maze of corridors, twisting this way and that, her scent like an invisible string leading us on. It’s like a video game. I’m waiting for the ambush.

But the place is deadly quiet.

We pass one office, lights on, computer blinking, half-drunk cup of coffee, no one there. Screens line the walls. Lots of fuzzy pictures of empty corridors.

We keep going. Keep running. Keeping finding fuck all.

Won’t stop me though.

I need to find her.

My little bird.

And then she’s there. Tweeting and fluttering about.

The others rush towards her. I hold up my arm, halting them. Then I raise my finger to my lips.
