“Him?”

“Shit!” she says, slapping her hand over her mouth.

I try to tug it away.

“Tell me?”

She holds it firm against her mouth and shakes her head.

“Hmmm,” I say, going to inspect the dishes. The pastry on the apple pie looks homemade although instead of the usual apple shape on top, there’s something that looks more like a skull and crossbones. It smells divine and my stomach gurgles at the thought of consuming all that.

“It was Nate, wasn’t it?”

Courtney’s eyes flash above her covered mouth.

I raise an eyebrow at her.

Her shoulder sag and she nods. “He said an omega is always starving hungry after a heat and he wanted you to have something good to eat.”

“But he didn’t want you to tell me he brought it over?”

“No.”

“Hmmmm,” I say again.

I pick out a spoon from the drawer, plunge it through the crust and into the apple mixture below, then bring it up to my mouth. I wrap my lips around the spoon and moan.

“Oh jeez,” I mumble. “That is so freaking good.”

“You have no idea how hard it was not to eat it,” Courtney says, snatching the spoon from my hand and taking a mouthful for herself. “That is so good.” Her eyes roll around in their sockets.

I grab the spoon and take another chunk for myself. The second piece seems even better than the first.

“Need more.” Courtney finds her own spoon from the drawer and soon we’re attacking the pie like it’s the last piece of food on Earth. “Fuck, I think my mouth is actually orgasming.”

“Mine too,” I groan.

“If his food is this good,” Courtney says, “imagine how good his dick will be.”

“Nope,” I say, shaking my head with my mouth full. “Not going to think about that.”

“You’re still mad with them, huh?”

“Can you blame me?”

“No,” Courtney pauses, “but they did rescue you.”

“Well boo for them,” I mumble. I lower my spoon. My stomach has that pleasantly full sensation I haven’t felt for days. “How did they know I was in trouble? I mean, I didn’t expect anybody to even realize I was in trouble for days.”

“You left your phone behind. I took it to the clinic and you weren’t there. No one would tell me where you were. It didn’t sit right with me. I thought about calling the police. Then I decided those alphas might be more helpful.”

I rest my head on my cousin’s shoulder. “Thank you. Again. I owe you big time.”

“You don’t owe me anything. No one’s stealing away my roomie without a fight.” She kisses the top of my head.

“Love you Court. Although, I have to tell you,” I say, picking up her book from the counter, “folding over the pages of books is sacrilegious. I may have to disown you if you don’t stop.”

Courtney snorts. “I like my books to be well loved and well read. They should be devoured so badly, their covers rip and their pages fall out. That is the sign of a good book.” I frown. She wags her spoon at me. “None of this uptight I-can’t-possibly-break-the-spine business.”
