“This one.”
“Why ever not? Is she blind? Stupid? Already bonded?”
“No, she’s none of those things. She’s clever and single and her eyesight is fine as far as I’m aware.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“Here we go,” my sister calls out, from behind me and I turn my head to see her walking across the room with a tray, a pot of coffee and a plate of cookies balancing on top. “Fresh out of the oven,” she says as she places them down on a coffee table and pours out a cup of coffee.
“Are they safe?” I ask her.
“Yours might be poisoned.”
“Molly!”
“I’m joking, Mom.”
My mom releases my hands and I reach over for the plate. I offer one to my mom and she shakes her head.
My sister whispers in my ear, “She hasn’t been eating much. In fact, it’s been a battle to get her to eat anything.”
“I can hear you, you know,” my mom says, as Molly hands her a coffee. “I’m just not hungry these days.”
I nod, and select a cookie, snapping it in half, crumbs tumbling into my lap.
Molly perches on the end of the chaise, a cup of coffee balancing on her knee.
“Axel was just telling us about this girl he likes,” my sister raises her eyebrows, “but unfortunately she doesn’t like him back.”
Molly pretends to faint back against the couch. “How could that ever be possible?” She peeks up at me. “Perhaps because the woman has taste and a brain cell?”
“It doesn’t make any sense. My boys are the most eligible alphas in the city. Women are queuing up to date them.” Molly rolls her eyes and sips her coffee. “Why would this woman refuse you?”
I turn the cookie halves around in my hands.
“Because I messed up,” I say quietly.
“Only to be expected,” Molly says.
“How?” my mom asks.
I bite through my cookie and chew. It’s surprisingly good. The last thing I ate of Molly’s tasted like rabbit shit. She obviously has been practicing.
“Did you apologize?” Molly asks.
“Yes.”
“Properly?”
“Of course I did.”
Molly snorts.
“What?” I say.
“You’re notoriously shit – sorry Mom – at apologizing, Axel. You and Angel.”
I look at my mom to contradict this piece of crap but to my surprise she nods in agreement.
