The door flies open and Angel drags out a medic by the scruff of his collar.
“Five,” I say, folding my arms across my chest.
Angel shoves the man in front of me and he stumbles down onto his knees before peering up into my eyes with fear.
“Where is she?” I say calmly because that always scares fuckers like these shitless.
“I-I-I don’t know who you mean?”
I bend down so my face is hovering right in front of his.
The man gasps and shrinks away.
“You do,” I say. “Because her cousin was in here less than an hour ago asking the same thing. So unless you want to confess to me that more than one omega has gone missing from your clinic, I suggest you start talking.”
“I’m just an orderly,” the man mumbles. “I don’t know anything about what goes on around here.”
“So who’s in charge, then?” Angel asks, coming to stand next to me.
“Dr. Hannah.” His eyes flick between the two of us as we glare at him. Angel growls. The man flinches and adds, quickly, “And Dr.,” he swallows, “Machin.”
“You know that name?” I ask Angel. He shakes his head. He wasn’t here when we brought our mother in and, back then, Dr. Hannah had been a junior. The older doctors have since retired.
“Where are they?”
“I don’t know.”
I take a step towards him and he scuttles backwards on his backside. “What do you mean, you don’t know?”
“They left. They didn’t stay.”
“I think …” Angel gestures in the orderly’s direction.
“Dean,” the man mumbles.
“I think, Dean, you had better start from the beginning, for all our sakes.”
“I haven’t done anything wrong,” he whimpers, watching with wide eyes as Angel reaches inside his jacket and adjusts his gun in his holster.
“We’ll be the judge of that,” I snap. “What happened?”
“An omega came in for her heat. She’s new and I don’t–”
“We know who she is,” Angel snarls.
The man gulps. “Omegas coming here for their heats is a new thing. There have only been a couple so far and Dr. Hannah and Dr. Machin have been overseeing their care directly.”
“Where did they take her?”
“To the heat room.” He points down the corridor. “It’s out the back. I’m not permitted to go out there. But then the cousin arrived with the omega’s phone, making a scene, so I went down to the heat room to tell the doctors and …”
“And?” I say, feeling the hairs on my skin stand on end and my blood boil.
“It was empty. There was no one there. I bleeped Dr. Hannah, but I have had no reply.”
“Surely you saw them go?” Angel says, his voice laced with skepticism. “I don’t believe you’re being upfront with us.” He turns to me. “Do you, Axel?”
“Ax-ax-ax-el? You’re Axel York?” His eyes grow even wider in horror.
