I hesitate. About him. About Colt. About Ford. About finding a darn cat. About everything in my life right now.
“You know there’s only one way to find out, right?” River says. “Come out with me tonight.”
I peer over my shoulder at Ava who’s clapping her hands together in delight.
“I can’t. I have plans with my best friend tonight.”
Said best friend frowns and shakes her head, mouthing, “what are you doing?!” at me.
“That is a shame,” he says, actually sounding genuinely disappointed. “I’m tied up for the next few evenings after that.”
Ava dives across the bed, snatching the phone right out of my hand.
“She’s free tonight,” she says breathlessly down the phone.
Now it’s my turn to mouth, “What the hell?”
“I actually had something come up,” Ava continues regardless, “so needed to cancel anyway.”
“You’re the best friend?” River says.
“I am. Where are you going to take her?”
“Where would you suggest?”
“Hmmm,” Ava says, examining me. “She hates fancy, but she also hates boring.”
River chuckles. “Yeah, that sounds like Molly. I’ll think of something. Tell her to be ready for seven.”
When Ava hangs up, I shake my head at her. “You know there is no way my brothers are going to let me go out with River Caspian.”
Ava shrugs. “So tell them you’re staying at my house.” She drags me towards her wardrobe. “Come on, we have to get you ready for a date with the hottest man on the planet.”

River
Seemsthe bodyguard isn’t exactly thrilled to be dragged along on my date with the omega.
Yeah, well, the feeling is mutual.
It’s hard to be charming and all that shit, with a man the size of a wardrobe glaring a hole in the side of your skull.
I try my best though, as I lead the omega down the path and out onto the moonlit beach.
“I don’t like this,” the wardrobe says, “it’s dark.”
Which is obviously the idea. Last time I tried to put my hand up her skirt, I had half a dozen people snapping photos.
Dark’s good. Dark means I can wrap my hand around her waist and pull her up tight against my body without anyone seeing. Including him.
She smells divine tonight, all spicy and sweet. It has my tastebuds sparking on my tongue. It has my fingers twitching on her waist.
“We’re only going down to that cove.” I point along the sand. “You can wait here if you want.”
“I’m not letting Molly out of my sight.”
“Ford,” she says, “it’s only over there and there’s no one in sight.”
